Carbs leaking....

gas....

I know this isn't the tech area, but I don't have a question either....

As some of you know, the transmission on the 83 GS 550 L bought the farm and I've been repairing it. And I did have it running. But the carbs were seeping gas.

So in an effort to get the son, the true owner and rider of this bike to learn something and work on it, I was having him tear the carbs down and put in new O-rings and reset the floats. Okay I know that was wasted effort on my part as he holds down a full time job and attends college full time and has a son of his own, and does what ever it is that 21 year olds do these days.

So I decided to finish this up myself. If nothing else to get it out of my way and the carbs off the bench. I figured the O-rings around the seats were the cause of my leak, so other than getting them out and back in, it wouldn't be a difficult fix.

So new O-rings, the set (83's only have two carbs) were put back together and I struggled to get them back in. After a couple of stupid mistakes on my part, they're in and well seated in the boots and I was all ready to turn the tank to prime and get them ready to go.

Prime on, I waited for a while and just as I was ready to turn it back to On. I noticed the gas leak again. It wasn't bad, just a drop or two, but gas dripping on the top of the engine, just didn't seem like a good thing to me. So I looked a little closer, as I had repaired the O-rings and couldn't think of where else it could be leaking from. Then while I was feeling around to determine where it was leaking from I touched the bowl drain bolts, they were loose. Apparently I had taken them loose and drained the carb bowls when I pulled the rack before pulling the engine for the tranny fix. I never tightened them up. DUH.

So now tight, she fired up and sounds pretty good. It was 9:00 PM when I got to this point, so this afternoon I'll roll it out of the garage and do a sync on the carbs. Should be ready to go after that.

Just goes to show, after all the planning, all the work, it's usually the little things that trip you up.

Dood! That is a first man. No one in history has ever done anything that stupid before.

And if ya believe that then I have some headlight fluid I'd like to sell you too

Man, the things I have done already while working tired. I'm not saying anything more :|

Other than maybe... let's just say I have a closet full of t-shirts

More than you can imagine buddy! 8-[

However I do seem to always be missing my screwdrivers??? :?

Sorry I already have a full container of the headlight fluid. I also have a left over needle and seat, too bad it's for a 65 Galaxy 4bbl.
You know the sad part of this story is I do remember that I made a mental note to tighten those. They say your mind is one of the first things to go, if anyone has seen mine wandering around lately, please send it home, it's much too little to be out by itself.

If I ever find my mind back, I'll tell it to watch for yours!

Glad to hear you got it fixed. The carbs probably needed the new o-rings anyway.
