DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Carbs or airbox is suspect, maybe more.

I second the coil idea. My bike would run fine for 15ish minutes and then start to bog down and eventually just fail. I stumped me though because if I let it sit for an hour it was start back up fine like nothing had happened. I had tested the coils before riding and they would pass every time. However, after riding (and I didn't realize this until later) the coils would get REALLY hot and fail. I replaced them with the Dynatec green coils (3 ohm) and did the horn relay mod on basscliff's site and wala; all was good in the world

Hi Mr. frijoles-and-beans,

So where are you in your troubleshooting? Do you have good spark? Have you replaced the plug caps? Have you tested the coils? You should get 3-5 ohms across the primary (the little input wires) and somewhere around 30K ohms across the secondary (the spark plug wires) on each coil. Yes, just stick your ohmmeter in the #2 and #3 spark plug caps and measure the resistance. Then do the same for #1 and #4. Have you replaced the intake boot O-rings? Have you tested your petcock?

Sorry, all I have are questions. I hope you can get this cleared up in time for our big weekend.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Ok, I've checked the spark. All four wires are putting out spark. I've checked if the tank was venting properly; it is. I checked the plugs. They are in very nice condition.

All this makes me wonder if it's the charging system. I will check it tommorow; the stator and r/r. I will also check the coils' resistance. I didn't have time today until this evening. I will have more time tomorrow.

Hmm, I was hoping that tkent02's suggestion about the bad vent would work; darn.

Basscliff, I have a set of carb boot o-rings on order, but they won't arrive until next week. I really hope that I can make it to the rally. Thanks for taking the time to come see me about my little dilemma. At this point I hope it's the coils so I can at least have a cause and just get down to fixing it. They delivered a good spark so I'm doubting it, but I haven't seen any numbers yet so I'll see what happens tomorrow.

I have orings and a garage. :D

I have the sneaky feeling from reading some of the responses that you guys think that my bike actually starts and moves forward. It doesn't yet. It doesn't start at all. Maybe I'm bad at explaining myself. I'm outside and about to check on things. Update in a little bit.

I've been cleaning up connections and think it might be the coils. The tests ran within normal parameters though, but I have a feeling that it's a weak set of coils that I'm running so still nothing. I hear those Dyna S or whatever I've heard them called here are a good upgrade. I'll look up the name. It's in some thread or other, probably in a few.

Looks like I'll be missing the rally this time Charlie G. I'll go for sure next time.

I'm going to put some new carb boot o-rings on too while I'm at it.

I only offer the following suggestions because it's something I've had happen to me before:
- Enough fuel in the tank?? (sometimes it sounds like there's plenty sloshing around when there isn't...)

- Kill switch enabled?
Mike

Mine absolutely will not start without some choke or full choke. That's even after having been on the road for awhile. I know that's due to the primary circuit being partially restricted somehow and I haven't had the time to clean it out yet. You may still have something that made it's way through the fuel system causing the problem. Choke it and see if you can get the plugs wet with fuel while you're cranking it. If not, it's still in carburetion.

Your post reminds me of when I first got the bike last year. I couldn't start it and I was about to break down and ask you guys about what it might be. It turned out to be that I had to (of course) pull the clutch in first. I was amused at myself and relieved that I didn't ask and look stupid, but I guess whoever reads this can judge me now. lol

I checked the basics first, thanks for reminding me. I wish it were something that simple. I'll be on the road soon, I think. Just waiting on some parts. Thanks for checking in on me.
