CDI/Igniter Question 80 GS550L

Hello everyone,

I believe my electrical issue can be attributed to a faulty CDI/Igniter. I'm having a difficult time locating one locally so I was wondering if anyone could advise me on someone who manfuactures a reliable part at a fair price or if there are any other bikes from that era (1980 GS550L) that share a common igniter box so I can broaden my search.

Any help is appreciated

If you can confirm it's bad I'd get a Dyna S. At $125 it's 1/3 the price of a new OEM igniter (yes, I AM serious). You can probably find a used one. I think a lot of models interchange, but risk it crapping out as well.

Umm, Well I've had no spark since I purchased the bike. I haven't been working on it for a while but last I had left it, I had replaced both coils and wires as one was bad and figured should do both while I'm at it. New Plugs, tested the Rectifier and it was bad so I got a new one of those. Tested the 'signal generator' (I think that's what it's called) Under the Suzuki Cover on the right side of the bike.
The part I'm having trouble with is a sealed black box with brass flanges to bolt it to the bike.
Looks like this http://www.ridgewayclassics.co.uk/GSX400_cdi_E_W.JPG
I tested a while back and thought it might be faulty, and had a friend who was a little more knowledgable check the bike out and he wasn't sure how to check that part for my bike specifically but thought the readings from it looked odd.
To order one I'm not clear if it's an 'igniter' or if it's a 'CDI' people have told me it's one and not the other and vice versa.

It's an ignitor, not CDI. If you have four terminals on each plug into the igniter I can post up instructions on how to test it.

The bike is at my brother's place across town so I can't check it now, but I believe there are 5 possibly 6 wires on the plug, plus an additional ground wire coming out of the box.

So if anyone had to guess since I've had no luck sourcing this part specifically for my bike, what would be more likely to be compatible....one from a bike of the same year, but possibly a 750 or 1100 or something? or...a 550 from years close to 80 (most likely after since I've heard pre-1980's bikes use a very different system)?

Oh I guess I should ask as well...Does that Dyna S kit include the part that I'm looking to replace? The picture on their website didn't show it so I'm not sure.

Once again, thank you very much

With some offers of igniters you might consider that as well, but yes the Dyna S replaces everything but the coils.

I've got an ignitor that came on my 1000. Bike ran fine (other than dirty carbs) when I got it. If you're interested, PM me.

Rudy

According to my reference software the 80-81 GS250, 450 and 550, and the 82 450 used the same igniter.
