    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

chain oil ???????

i have a non o-ring chain. whats the best oil or grease to use on it. thanks
 
chain wax :) In leiu of that, some WD40 will work in the mean time.

Gear oil, motor oil, bar and chain oil, but NEVER WD40!

It may penetrate, but not lubricate! That chain and sproket will wear faster than you can say Tsubaki.

Get something for m/c chains.

I agree.

WD 40 is a solvent and cleaner, not a lubricant per se.

Chain wax works well and does not fling (much). PJ-1 also makes a good product.
 
Maxima seems to out-perform them all.....good for your cables as well. ;)

You havent seen his chain. I have. I advised WD40 to penetrate, no its no lubricant. Its not even a great penetrant. Its really a Water Dispersment (Hence, W D) His chain really needs replaced probably as its showing a bit of rust. Put wax on it, you're just covering the rust with wax. You honestly need a penetrant first, then put a treatment on it if you keep it. Which, it should be ok for now, but I would consider looking into a new one pretty soon, as well as sprockets.
 
If you want to keep using a non oring chain and it is rusting, take it off completely and soak it in a hot mixture of 140W gear oil and moly grease, the grease will liquify. drop the whole chain into this mixture, it will seep into the rollers and pins then cool. You can then put chainwax on to seal it up a little. But if it has rust on it I wouldn't guess that every section is free. You might have tight spots already. It might almost be better to replace the chain. Straight chain 6000lb is cheap, about 5bucks a foot from a bearing supply shop. So, you can drop about 35bucks on straight chain or get an oring chain from Parts unlimited for 60 and it will last you at least 3 times as long if you keep it adjusted correctly.:-k

Never think you can lube a chain with WD40, there is just not enough oil content in it, sure it darkens the rust, but that is all.

If the chain is this bad, throw it in the trash and get a new one. A broken chain can destroy the engine and injure the rider. Nothing to monkey around with.
