    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Chain & sprocket conflicting info, some questions

Hey everyone,
I want to change the chain and sprockets on my '82 550LZ (I don't trust the P.O.) and am finding conflicting information. I hope someone here can help me out and set me straight.

According to the Haynes manual, my bike's OEM chain has 108 links. The chains that Z1 lists for my bike are 110 or 112 links. Which do I believe?

And regarding sprockets, what do the different T designations mean? i.e., 13T, 14T, 15T, for the front sprockets, and 41T, 42T, 43T, for the rear. I can't find any specs regarding the sprockets for this bike. Bike Bandit also has several sprockets that will fit my bike, I don't know which to get.

I just want to make sure I get the correct parts for my bike. Thanks for the help!
 
The "T" number designates the number of teeth on each sprocket.
Count yours, and if you don't want to change ratio use the numbers you have now.
 
The "T" stands for the number of TEETH the sprocket has. For example, a 42T is a 42 tooth sprocket. You can change the gearing by using a higher or lower number of teeth on either sprocket. More teeth in back will make the bike accelerate more quickly, but your overall top speed will be lowered, conversely, lowering it a couple of teeth will effect the speed at which you get to your target speed, but, will cause the bike to have a slightly higher top speed, as well as cruise at a lower RPM. This can help on a bike that you plan to use as a commuter, for gas mileage and wear and tear. Tho, i really wouldnt worry bout changing gearing.

Z1 probably lists the chain being 110 or 112 because perhaps they dont carry, or dont make a 108 chain. You may have to cut a link or two off...
 
Your front sprocket is 15T and the rear is 49T for your "L" model of '82.
 
Thanks for all the info everyone! Interesting bit about the gearing, that might be something I consider lowering, as this is mainly going to be a commuter bike.

Don, did you look that up somewhere, or do you know from experience?
 
The factory service manual has the info on chain length and sprocket teeth. You can download the manual for free from repairmanualclub.com or from Basscliff's site.
 
I have both the Haynes manual and the one from Cliff's site, couldn't find the sprocket info. I was able to find the chain info.

At any rate, now I know what to order, thanks guys!
