A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've just come across a 1981 GS1000G with full fairing and hard bags that can be had for $600.00 Canadian. The bike has had 2 owners and was garaged and stored for a number of years by the first owner, but the 2nd owner was garageless and just left it outside with no protection for 3 years. He only rode it 2 or 3 times and didn't like the feel???
29,000 km's,
tires are weather cracked,
throttle sticks open(but may be the cruise control add on),
pipes are after market and rust free,
seat is weathered and cracked,
tank and covers sun faded(black),
gas tank is rust free(checked with mirrors),
petcock is leaking(original),
fairing is in rough shape but not the worst I've come across,
broken choke cable,
left turn signal will not blink(lights up), right side blinks,
has duel air horns,
front right brake caliper is sticking,
the rest of the brakes and rotors are fine,
charging system seems to be ok, but he doesn't know if it was updated,
engine starts right up when cold and runs really strong,

What do you think???
Company for my 1981 GS1000GL and 1981 GS650GL or should I pass???

Randy

well if you don't want it randy, send it to me! i don't see how you can go wrong at that price. grab it !!!...h.g. :D

If you do not mind a little elbow grease I think it should be a solid purchase. I would try to talk him down 100 t0 150 less if possible.

These are all common problems with old GS bikes. I'm sure the throttle is an easy fix, if not the cruise control, maybe a sticking cable. Chocke cable is easy to replace (I've gone without and done it by hand for almost a year), Petcock can be rebuilt for about $20 and an hour of labor, the directionals are an easy fix- rewire a new flasher, seat can be recovered, get some new tires and repaint it if you like.

Go for it! It seems like a deal to me!

How can you possibly pass up the DUAL AIR HORNS :?: :P

(actually sounds like a reasonable price)

I will happily drive out to the 'Peg to pick it up if you pass!!

signal problem might be as easy as a disconnected wire! sounds like a great price!!

At that price you could buy it, and part it out to make 3 times the asking price. So it's a good investment regardless of whether you want to restore it to ride.

Oh man, you need to snatch that up!
$600 Can. Isn't that like $78.50 US :P

All kidding aside. If you are half way capable with a tool or two you should have a winner there.

Have fun this winter,
Rico

Yep. Go for it. If the engine is strong, you've got a great project.

Sounds expensive to me. Offer him $150 bucks. You're going to spend a bunch a bucks fixin' that old nail up. 3 years in the weather is a long time.
