    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Yes?..and thanks to all. I even bought a 32mm impact socket and everything. A couple tries on the nut and it spun right off. Then back to carpentry. Late yesterday, I put on the master link, put everything back together and reasonably in line and this morning, it was sweet. No more noisy clanking, no lash, nice power delivery. I?ll check the adjustment in a few days.

Now to change the oil (at least that, however much a PITA as it is with header and oil cooler, I done many, many times). Then one day, get rid of the Coca-Cola-looking brake fluid and install the stainless lines that sit in waiting. Replace the headlight socket so I?m not limited to hi-beam, fix my turn signals and maybe, just maybe, one day, install the ?83 console and speedo I bought about five years ago???.and maybe wash the bike, too.
 
Read Bert's adventure with interest, as I replaced the chain and sprockets on my 1100et this week-end. I seem to have had the opposite issue.....is it bad if the nut holding on the front sprocket is so loose you can take it off with fingertips? :eek:

Did you put some anti-seize on the threads and splines?

No. I'm guessing that would've been wise though, eh?

I was amazed at the condition of the old sprockets. After 24,000 miles, there was absolutely no discernable change in the shape of the teeth. Had I been using another 630, I probably would've reused the sprockets.
 
It is more than just a habit with me because you just know that the
next poor SOB to have to do it, will be you! ;)

BTW, I used the clip-style master. Some folks think they're horrible. I had one on the last 24K chain and I've probably never had anything but a clip-style master.........is there an actual issue with these, or are people being overly paranoid?

It is all I've ever used, also. If you put them on correctly, I don't see the problem.
I run one on the drag bike, so do most of the guys I know.
 
Glad to hear it finally got back together. What brand did you go with?
 
And before you lube the chain, put a dab of silicone on that master link to help hold it.

Just to be sure here. Are the two little c-clamps used to compress the seal rings? That seems to be the hardest part of the entire job.

P.S. what are you supposed to do with the grease that the chain is packed in? Leave it alone or rinse it off and apply lube?

I leave it on it wears off eventually. Then start to use the chainwax.
 
Jesus, I can?t believe I?m asking this question. Job?s done and everything?s working smoothly, but I?m second-guessing here. When I ordered everything from Rob/Jeff at Z1, I got the sprockets, link, chain and spacer. I installed the spacer between the engine and the sprocket ? it seemed like the only logical place for it, but I didn?t ask. I did a search here and people said it goes on the inside like I have it. So today, I?m looking to order a bolt set from Z1 and started looking through the site to see if there?s anything else I want. I looked at the washer and it said ?This washer goes on the OUTSIDE of the sprocket! Not between the case and the sprocket.? That?s the 6mm washer and I?m pretty sure that?s what I got. I don?t think it was the 1.25mm washer.

Somebody give me a taste of the ultimate truth here.
 
The spacer, goes outside if you have enough room to still have the safety washer to lock the nut down. The safety washer, rides on the splines and then you fold it into one side of the nut after it is tight.
