All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

so im thinking of changing the sprockets on my mz...it came 15/50...im thinking of 16/42.....the top end speed is crap now...ive read all the posts here about going to the 42...and that sounds like what im looking for...but im thinking the front sprocket needs to be changed too...should i go down one tooth to a 14, or up one tooth to a 16....or leave it alone and stay at a 15......this is my daily rider, rain or shine.....also what about changing to a 520 chain and sprockets...or will the strenght of the 530 chain be better...

Thanx for all input..

Greetings and Salutations!!

Hi Mr. RigRoller,

The GS550 really needs to spin up. If you change the gearing too much it will fall on its face.

The 530 chain is the standard for these old bikes. Many have converted their bikes to use the 530. Use high quality chains and sprockets and maintain them properly for best results.

Here are a couple of gear ratio calculators:

http://www.sprocketcalculator.com/

http://www.vmar.com/java/gear.html

And now here is the S.W.A.G. Read it, learn it, live it, love it. :)

If you are here you probably have a 30 year old motorcycle that needs about 20 years worth of maintenance. You'll find all kinds of helpful tips, procedures, manuals, etc, in the links below. Let's get started.

Let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

I recommend keeping it simple and just go to the 16T on front and leave the back alone. The rpm on the freeway will drop a useful amount, but first gear will still be usable.

+1. My 550LZ has 16/50 gears now. It takes a bit of the edge off on the highway. I wouldn't go any taller. 16/42 would be about a 26% drop in torque from stock.

550s are at their best at around 10kRPM
