    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

changing spark plug cables

Okay so I don't know who's stupid idea I was but my bike's spark plug cables and caps
are green, as well as the handlebars ans the rims.

So I will take off the glue and unsolder the cables from the coils, but then my question
is, do I really need to purchase specific cable or could I just take one that resists the
current and heat around ? Because I where I work there is a big selection or cables
which i could use.

And I'm pretty sure the caps didn't do a good contact to the spark plugs just hearing
the unplugging noise, so any suggestions about that ?

I searched for threads around this but I'm not very familiar with all the therms in english and my GS 550 is from 78.
 
I know this may seem like a dumb question, but I considered maybe the cables are
special not to change too much the inductance of the coil, to get a correct spark, but
maybe I am just thinking too much !
 
One thing is to get proper cables. The stock ones are 7mm. Auto parts stores sell cables for cheap so there is no reason to try to mess around.
 
Yeah but the issue is I'm not in the US like you guys, it's quite painfull to get around some
hardware sometimes for bikes around here.

In fact all the parts I'm thinking to put on this bike are from US or Japan and only 1
from Germany, you're all very lucky ! :)
 
The spark plug wires are not motorcycle specific. use 7mm solid core (copper) automotive/agricultural plug wire material.
 
mine are dry-rotting also. so, how's it possible to swap the plug wires only when they're hard-wired into the coil?
 
In this case can't you just cut the existing cable and then resoldera new one or the
remains of the older ?
 
I still haven't done that so I'm not really sure how the wire is attached to the coil on my
GS because it's seeled with some king of glue and it's the first time I work on a so old
motorcycle, sorry for my "noobness" :-\\\
