DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Charging System Works!

Actually, I am going to run the Stator tests this week.

Thankfully, I've run into no charging problems with my bike. The only times that I have had to charge my battery have been after using the starter a lot to diagnose other problems. Otherwise, she seems to keep a decent charge under normal operation.

Because I want to replace and rebuild my crappy wire harness and relocate the electrics to use a smaller battery, I will double check my charging system. My R/R looks to be the original (small, still has the multi-colored "yellow" wires, etc.). Of course, the Stator Papers regimen will reveal the truth.

What should I do if the charging system really is good?

Sorry if that is a dumb question, but it seems that the old "ain't broke = don't fix it" might not apply to these charging systems. Essentially, the design of these systems IS broken, so even if I don't have to replace a stator or R/R now, is there anything else I should do to a charging system that functions in spite of its bad design? I will be moving the R/R and replacing wires and connections already, should I look into just replacing the R/R while I am at it? Are there other changes I should make to the existing parts (e.g., rerouting the ground wires to the battery negative)?

TIA

Hi,

What should I do if the charging system really is good?

Sorry if that is a dumb question, but it seems that the old "ain't broke = don't fix it" might not apply to these charging systems.

I tend to agree with you. I think "Fix it now, or fix it later" may be a more accurate statement. If the stator is passing the active tests and looks like it has not been overheating, then it's probably safe to just preemptively replace the r/r unit with a good Honda-type unit, or even the Compufire unit. Make sure all electrical connections and grounds are clean and solid.

Thank you for your indulgence,

I would still ADD another (12ga.) ground from the battery to the R/R and then to the frame.
It hurts nothing and can cure many ills. ;)
