A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Question Today was day three of having my 83GS750ES on the road. But when i went to leave work i had a dead battery. I compression started it to get it home. 55 lovely miles. But when i got home the battery was still dead. It's not getting charged. SO where is a good place to start in the diagnostics. Is there a common issue with these things. And what are some you guys running for sprockets on these, this thing is so low geared it unreal. When i am doing 60 mph im turning 4000rpm. I think that is a little high myself. But i could be wrong. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get started. I need to get this thing back on the road it's my daily means of transportation right now. Thanks

Diagnosis:
Start the engine (err well push-start it  ), connect a voltmeter at the right range to the battery + and -. Turn the throttle to 3000-4000 rpm. The voltage should now rise from 12 to about 14 V. If it does this, then your battery is dead. Replace.
If it doesn't do this, then check (measure on meters' resistance-position) the wiring to- and from the regulator/ rectifier with the engine off. This is the alu thing with the cooling ribs attached to it (no, not the engine). If everything is wired OK, replace the regulator/ rectifier. It's a common defect on Gs's.

Good luck, Marco.

Not sure about the sprocket size but you do need to check out the Stator Papers. Go to the homepage and click on 'In the Garage', then click on 'The Stator Papers'. There is a wealth of information in those that will help you diagnose your charging problems. If it were up to me I would just get an Electrex stator and regulator/rectifier, kinda like getting a midas muffler and putting all your troubles behind you.

4k - 60 mph on your bike sounds right with stock gearing (14/43). BTW, good choice in bikes. :)

The battery is brand new so it shouldn't be tit's up but i will check the regulator and stator thanks for the info.
