A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Choke cable doesn't hold

My choke cable won't stay out when I pull it for a cold start. It just pops back down under spring tension. Is there something I can tweak or do I have to replace it?

Pull it out and give it a twist. It will stay put until you rotate it back to release it.

That is the way they are supposed to work, but they don't all do that.

The most common cure is to replace the "choke" cable.

I replaced mine, but I upgraded to an '82 setup, with the lever under the left handgrip.
If you are contemplating this improvement, be aware that you also need new parts on the carbs for the new cable to hook into. :o

.

Thanks, guys. I do turn it to the right, but it still doesn't hold. I have a new cable in a box and will replace it next week when I remove the valve covers to install the new gasket and tach drive gear.

There is an adjustment, but it often doesn't work. If you remove the handlebar pad and pull up the rubber nipple, you will see the two plastic knurled pieces. You can try to asrew the top one into the lower one more, but it may well break.

A clothespin works pretty darned well to hold the cable up, and adjusts pretty easily too. New cables are around 20 dollars.

Havine replaced a number of these, I have not seen any part of the design which would indicate that any kind of twist lock is included.

Valve clearances: Of course. The engine was rebuilt only a few thousand miles ago, so I'd be surprised if it needed adjustment, unless the mechanic did it wrong. (which is possible, considering that he used liquid gasket on the valve cover instead of an OEM gasket, which damaged the tach drive gear). Since I don't have any shims, I hope it won't need adjustment.

I received a new choke cable with the bike, so while the tank's off I'll install it. Should even do a new throttle cable while I'm in there.
