A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

appears to be rust free

Maybe they tried to steal your converter, big problem here especially on SUV's - easy to get under.

Yeah ... luckily for me, the converter is still there.

For a second there I was thinkling you meant the catalytic converter on the GL 1100 :-D Was searching the web for GL 1100 Converter to see where it was located on the bike lol.

ahhhhh ... I am back to earth now.

I just couldn't stay away - gonna go ahead and remove the heads. which means I have to dissassemble the radiator and timing cover.

happy happy joy joy

edited: removed radiator (note to self for future reference, if radiator hoses are dry rotted just cut the dang things off instead of wasting time trying to take them off).

Yep - valves were open. Instead of MMO, I used Lucas oil. Will spray clean with Deep Creep.

P.S. Not too much damage, there was oil in the engine

THAT sir, is a MAJOR undertaking. I dont envy the task ahead of you. However, as said, it would be a hell of a learning experience. I would suggest if at all possible, picking up that other 'Wing. At least you will have a motor that, if what the seller says is true, once the head gasket is replaced, runs, and would be a good point of reference for you. Having 3 or 4 spare motors laying around myself, I can say that it certainly helps the learning curve out quite a bit, and its NEVER a bad idea to have spares available if the price is right.

How can you tell if a motor is seized?

I have the timing belt covers off now and has some rusty tension pulleys. I tried turning the center pulley (don't know what I am doing) and it won't budge. Is that a good thing that I can't turn it?

I have to get the entire timing belt assembly apart to pull the heads. I can do it, just want to make sure the manual gets here first otherwise I wont get it synced right when putting it back together.

yep, I think I have enough to keep me out of the streets and out of trouble for a while :-D

Pulling the head shown in that one photo is a MUST; that brown crud is way down into the intake port. No way I'd trust a clean out job.

Do the job right...as you seem to be willing to do.

Good luck.

The manual arrived today. I am gonna just take the engine out to work on it. I want to see if the piston walls are scratched etc. I can probably set the engine on a desk and just task away at it (hopefully).

Man ... this is gonna take me forever to restore

......................should be fun :-D

In order to turn the timing belt, I have to rotate alternator rotor bolt clockwise (also have to turn it to align TDC piston #1 and mark everything).

Now looking for alternator rotor bolt .........

If you are tearing down the engine don't even try to turn it over, all the crap in the cylinders will just tear stuff up.

Ok ... I haven't found the alternator rotator bolt so I have not turned it over. Glad I checked.

Looks like I have everything disconnected from the head (except valves) and its still glued on the side of the engine. I dont know how to crack the seal.

Rubber mallet? Or look for a pry point at the head gasket(s). Honda is typically pretty good about providing that kind of stuff.

Ok, gonna play with it a bit (first timer and I might be overly careful).

Edited: Its way too late to be banging around in my garage - neighbors will be mad at me .... gonna put this on hold.

Not meaning to hijack my own thread ....... what recommendations for painting the frame? I might as well do it with this many parts off of it. Hi-temp resistant paint?

Also, If I want to take the faring off, what sort of headlight assembly should I look for? Is there a universal one?
