    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Clear Coat Paint Question (Repeat-Sorry)

Once I get my 82 GS850L back from the mechanic and back on the road, I want to do some cosmetic cleanup. Little light surface rust on metal mounting brackets from front rubber footpegs, a few bolts, etc. Wire wheel on bench grinder cleaned the brackets and bolts up nice (and I even still have my fingertips in tact), but I'm told I should spray clearcoat to protect and seal the parts first, then wax. This way rust might not come back (and pigs might fly some day!) Do I need special High Heat clear coat paint? Acrylic, lacquer or other? What type gives best durabilty so I don;t have to do this every couple of months? Would like to just buy something off the shelf and the local Home Dept, like a Rustoleum or other generic brand spray paint. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

I used some high temperature clear designed for use on engine headers - 1200 F or something like that. It's pretty good stuff; sprays out pretty well and lays down flat - be careful of runs. Needs to be baked in the oven to get to proper curing.

Everyone has an opinion, here's mine.
i used fords old (not available but still can be found) chrome cleaner on my left bracket 4 months ago and still no rust on it, coated it with wax, still rust free! want before and after pictures of the right side? i would not clear coat it but you can if you get it really really clean and oil free first.
and yes i ride almost every day.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the advice and opinions. I guess if the bolts, etc are not subject to heat, I really don't need high heat paint. But if its more durable than Krylon regular metal paint (for example) I might as well use it. I'll let you know as things progress.

and if you don't like it you can always remove it.
