A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Clouds GS Restoration Log

Well it just got worse... I just got my classic 73 coupe Mercedes back from my brother after he stole the carb from it and let it sit in the driveway until the rockers rusted through. $&)@$&)$@&$)(($)WW)_(#@#@$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just gonna let the car go :(
I am a neurotic perfectionist and it will cost me a lot to get the car where I would be happy with it. Dammit...

Well, actually I think that's a pretty healthy attitude. Take the proceeds and plow it into a GS restoration project. Don't forget to slip some Ex-Lax into bro's chocolate pudding next time you have him over for dinner. He shouldn't expect to get off completely free :)
Don

The original carbs need to be rebuilt, this time for real. I'll do a polish job on them and clean them up. CloudbreakMD gets to buy the parts and provide me with dinner someplace in Bethesda. Meanwhile the chain needs installation and other things tending to.

Spring is here and it's time to finish this. Monday we are going to do just that. With pics. Should be a hoot.

It was nice working on the bike again. While we didn't get a lot accomplished tonight I reacquainted myself with the bike.
I still want to replace a lot of fasteners, the foot pegs, rear foot brake lever, front fender, the tachometer, grips, control levers, and the switchgear. I know... Overkill but why not?
The carbs still have to be rebuilt (again). Duane is planning a little something with that, but I will let him expand on that when he's ready.

We have somewhat of a mystery in that the throttle cable is too tight. It doesn't seem possible to get the required 1/16" of play in the cable before engaging the valve. I have the adjustments all the way down and it's still tight.

The cable is orginal, the mounts are too. Does anyone have a part number for the throttle cable of a 750T visible on their housings?

The carbs are not in the greatest shape. One bore is corroded, an idle adjuster is stripped, and they have been worked around a bit. I cleaned them up to make them work and we will use them on a temp basis until the other set can be rebuilt to exacting standards. Spring is here so we need to ride.

That's weird with the throttle cable. Are you sure the cable bracket on the carbs are on properly and the cable is routed properly?

The cable housing isn't tight and there aren't other options for running it. I haven't gone into the grip yet since CloudbreakMD sez he didn't open the assembly but that's the next step.

I put my shop book and owner's manual on Basscliffs site - may wish to look there. Otherwise where on the housing should I look?

Tweaking the hand controls solved the throttle cable problem. We started the bike with the temporary carbs and it idles find. I did a quick sync on the rack and it looked OK.

There was a fuel leak that seemed to be coming from one of the fuel tubes between the carbs. I have his better set and will go about refinishing it.

We did get the front sprocket nut off. At least 100 lbs of torque on that bolt, tightest I've ever seen. The manual calls for around 35.

The new chain was installed as well.

What new? I sold my 2000 ZRX1100 and have starting using the proceeds to... Buy more nos parts. Just picked up a brand new tachometer. Pics will eventually follow.

Is the bike up and running? Last posts from duanege suggested it's been started up but how about a general update with some new photos?:)

I started working on the bike again. I finished installing the new chain and removed the handlebars are levers to exchange them for clean new parts.

My grips finally arrived.... They look good but have come across the same problem I have had for a while now. Time... :(

Bike is looking better than ever.:) Great job! One suggestion if you were unaware...Evapo Rust will eat off the rust on your shocks and various other chromed parts. Soak them for a while, lightly scrub with a stainless steel wire brush, soak some more as need, rinse, and hit them with some furniture polish spray wax to protect against the rust coming back. The rust will return eventually, but the wax will postpone it for a while. Good stuff.
