    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Clutch backing plate and damper springs

Its me again,with my broken clutch.:( Wrote a thread earlier,about my GS 1000 with no oil pressure. Found out the pump gear had been forced outwards and crashed into the damper springs(or who knows it isnt vice versa,the springs came out and tore the snap ring off the pump gear),which are now gone,except 2 that remains. I came up with the idea of just welding the primary gear to the backing plate,but on second thought its not so wise as all the power would be transmitted through the 3 rivets that originally was intended only for keeping the backing plate in place.:oops: Also some of you guys thought it was a bad idea,and gave me the advice of getting a new backing plate and springs. I checked with a local workshop,but they couldnt get the parts. They could possibly get a complete basket,but it was abit on the expensive side.So I wonder: Where can I get the springs and backing plate? In the meantime,I have a better idea for a redneck repair than I came up with first::D Instead of welding the primary to the backing plate, I will cut up 6 pieces of thick wall steel pipe and put them in the slots where the springs used to be. Then I weld them to the backing plate. Since the plate will have to be changed anyway(its also damaged so I doubt it will hold the springs in place anymore),no vital parts will be damaged,and the force will be transmitted where it was meant to. What do you think? How will it affect the clutch's behaviour without damping? And is any parts susceptible of breaking down because of the mod?

You can find time to time used Gorilla Hubs on ebay. The last one I bought was in nice shape; better than on my ED for under $100. Don't expect prices to stay as low as they are now. Look for teh thick welded rivits. It is easy to spot. Ideally the inner is clean and not worn by the clutch plates.

I won't comment on any of the backyard mechanikin. If it fits, get one of those HD clutch nuts as well.:-\\\

I did the back yard repair on my 1000 clutch hub; ground down the rivets, shimmed the springs with washers, put the back plate back on and had it welded. Those billet hubs seem like a good idea for a heavy duty application but if you just want to get rid of the rattle noise, shimming the springs seemed like the way to go to me.

Since his clutch already blowup and took out his oil pump, not sure I would recommend a simple shim job:(. HD backing plate is in order.
