clutch basket spacer removal

I would go easy with the slide hammer, any impact goes through those big transmission bearings you don't want to have to replace later.

Thanks Tom. Will keep that in mind. Trying a steering wheel type puller tommorrow...

the needle bearings and spacers are the same on 99% of the GS's....(750-all/850/1000/1100 except 83(narrower spacer-same bearing)1150 same bearing-narrow spacer.
i have a 30lbs box of this stuff..it never goes bad.
i wouldn't waste my time welding anything.
install and H/D kit or leave it alone.
also........
the H/D kits have the same length springs as a stock basket.
the basket has pockets in it..the H/D springs are of a heavier winding but still the same length to fit in the basket pockets.

Finally

Finally

Got the puller and went at it. Took awhile. I would pull on it and let it sit for awhile and spray it some more etc. I think it was really stuck on the shaft and the gear behind. I will need some parts. I want to replace the spacer, and both bearings. The smaller one behind the basket for the oil pump gear looked pretty bad. Ed, do you have that one?

The other spacer for the oil pump gear is still stuck on the shaft. Is that okay?

Finally got my son's cheap camera...He couldn't find it. In his drawer of all places. Yes he looked:confused: Sorry for the bad quality on some pics...

I am thinking it all looks stock. Thanks for all the help.

David

David,
Yes, all stock. Lots of rust too. I've never seen an engine with that much. Not good. Hope you don't have any rusty bearings.

Let me know what you need. I have both of those needle bearings and spacers.

Ed

david,
STOP!
your engine has had water in it and if it hasn't it might as well had.
move on..don't waste any more time.
i guarantee the crank and tranny bearings are rusty also.
bad deal...

Sadly, I believe this is true. Bummer.:( At bare minimum I'd split the cases and check out all the bearings you can see with a very keen eye looking for corrosion.

can't see rod bearings..can feel but not see.
these engines are somewhat inexpensive.
if your looking for the experience then split the cases but i wouldn't spend a nickel on that engine.
just a crank rebuild if your parts was all good is several hundred dollars.
again...
BUMMER!

I think the pictures make it look worse than it is. Unfortunately I have already spent some money on this engine. I guess some of that is my lack of experience in knowing what to look for. I did notice that the clutch cover was not fully on when I went to look at it the first time. Everything turned over well and still does. The top end looked great when I did the valve shims. I even looked inside the spark plug holes and the tops of the pistons are shiny aluminum.

I will pull the oil pan next and see and take some better pictures when I get some more light and a better camera.

All the brown you see wipes right off. I was spraying alot of deep creep and the surface corrosion was coming off and going everywhere.

I don't want to give up yet....maybe I'm foolish

I just ordered a stator for this from z1 yesterday too.

I appreciate all your input.

Thanks.

The spacer was installed backwards. The groove is supposed to face IN to provide clearance for the small bearing.
