DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Clutch cable broke

Hey all, as I was driving to work this morning (one of the best days this summer will bring), I took off from a stoplight, and as I shifted from first to second, I hit a false neutral, and ended up in third (with some lovely grinding). This happened in 1/4 second probably.

I then found the clutch handle hadn't returned to its normal position. Moved it a few times, clearly not connected to anything now. After a few awesome stoplights/signs and intersections in 3rd gear, I managed to get home. I then drove my cage to work and wont have any time to check out my bike for a while.

Any ideas? Simple cable replacement, or could it be something more serious? Thanks.

Edit: Also, I dont know what happened when, did the cable breaking cause the false neutral, or was it the other way.

Check to make sure all the clutch adjustment screws are not loose on the lever and where it attaches to the gearbox.

I think a visual inspection would reveal a lot, follow the cable from the clutch lever, checking for damage, if the cable is badly pinched somewhere, that could easily mean the it is broken inside, and you need a replacement, if the cable is loose just put it back on and test.

Once you know the cable is good and adjustment screws are tight, you'll be digging in deeper.

Hi,

It's very possible that you clutch cable has stretched. Of course, that would necessitate a new one.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Cant access that page.
Oh.
Maybe click here and it'll take you there. My broken cable is post 36.

It could be that you need a certain number of posts before you can view the Off Topic stuff. Or it could be that my method of linking was bad.

Bottom line if you can't read the page... My cable clearly snapped. I bought a cable from somebody here and figured out how to install it.

alnmike, you do not have permission to access this page.

Anyway, I was able to find time last night to look about. The cable is a little frayed right up top where it connects to the lever. I just need to see if its able to be reattached, before waiting the 3 weeks it takes to get something shipped to alaska... If only I would have remembered to bring my Clymer's to work..

Edit: I like the map in your sig. Somehow Hawaii is huge, and Alaska is a texas sized island as well. Sorry, its just something an Alaskan would say, weve been fighting maps like that forever :)
