I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

clutch chatter at idle APE clutch hub nut

Is the APE nut necessary for street riding??

My '79 gs1000 chutch chatters at low idle and I'm expecting its a loose hub nut (hoping that's all it is.). The bike has 42K miles and I got it running pretty good and roadworthy but I haven't put many miles on it.

Gonna get a good look at the clutch but if the nut is loose, should I order the APE nut and wait or cranks that sucker on and get back on the road? I have other bikes but just got the front end on the gs and want to ride it. Oh, and what about cranking the nut on? years back I broke a harley trans main shaft I forget what I was doing but it involved the clutch hub nut. On the GS is it regular right hand threads and is there a procedure for locking the shaft and torquing the nut or do I just hit it with electric impact??

The GS1150 nut is a good alternative if cost is important. It's beefier than the stock nut and a good bit cheaper than the APE nut.
Best method to hold the hub is using a tool like the service manual shows. EBC sells such a tool for about $20.

Oh, and the rattle may be from the hub itself. An extremely common issue on the GS1000. I shimmed the springs on one clutch hub and it quieted down the noise quite a bit. I had another GS1000 with a HD backplate w/HD springs and not only was the bike quiet, the clutch action was much improved. Problem is it's hard to find the HD rebuild kits these days.

awesome, thanks. I could do that backing plate spring shim and I think tack the rivets with my harbor freight wire feed welder (I can't imagine that the rivets need so much a weld as shown in the flying banana rework.) ,,, oh and the HD back plate and ??HD springs, if I were to go that route, who was the manufacturer? or part numbers?? where should I look for that HD set up

So hold the hub and torque, I'll need to check the manual. with harleys, I used to jam something in there to hold the hub and torque but then I got an electric impact and that delivered just the "right amount of touque". and the nut is regular right hand threads>??
