A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here so please bear with me. I recently bought a '78 GS550 off ebay for $670, it was halfway to being a cafe racer and the owner never had the time to put into it. So far I've cleaned the carbs and gotten to run fairly well, but with zero controls on it ie: no brakes, clutch, lights, etc. So now that I've determined that i did not, in fact, buy a lemon, I'm moving onto the controls. I've come to find that there was no clutch release screw included in the box of parts I purchased. I will most likely go and buy one online in a few hours from motogrid.com, but I noticed something strange with the clutch push rod. There's no spring to it at all. I thought that it was meant to push itself out of the engine and the goal of the clutch release mechanism was to push it back in. right now it just clunks in and out, only about an inch or two. I;ve tried to switch gears with the rod both all the way out and in, but i lurch forward and stall every time.
So my question to you all is this: Could i have clutch issues looming inside the transmission because there is no push or pull on the rod while its sticking out of the engine by itself?

If i need to clarify anything for you guys, just let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Pushing it in takes a lot of force, that's why it comes with a worm gear, or helix or whatever you want to call it to push it in. There's a lot of leverage involved. Like about three inches of lever travel to move that pushrod 1/8 inch or so? Without any leverage you would have to push it hard enough to compress all six clutch springs. I would guess more than 100 lbs to push it in, but that's just a WAG. I wouldn't even worry about it until you have all the right parts installed.

If you need parts I have two 550s parting out, have quite a bit of stuff left.

If someone took the helix out, maybe they didn't get it oriented properly. It goes back in more than one way.
