    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

clutch slips 81 GS 750L

My 81 GS750L slips the clutch "sometimes" almost always when it's cold until it's been run about 10 to 15 minutes (ie drivin). Once warmed up it dosn't seem to do it as often, but I can still get it to slip a little if I get on it hard in a higher gear (3rd at like 30 mph or 4th and 5th at varied higher speeds) not always but now and again often enough to have me worried. Replaced the clutch discs and springs last year, inspected the basket and steels (were all fine) since the steels were true and not blued or burnt in any way could the slipage be from a. maybe putting the steels in in the wrong way or b. maybe the stealership gave me weak springs? Any ideas?
 
I am rebuilding my clutch right now on an 850.

Did you replace the plates with new or salvage clutch plates? What order did you put them in....clutch plate/drive plate/clutch plate or drive plate/clutch plate/ drive plate.

From my research I have found that the flatside on the steels should go into the basket.

The clutch on my 850 slips a little when cold too. It's fine when hot so I figure replacing the 23 year old springs with new heavy duty items should cure it. It's odd that your clutch should still slip with new springs, plates and steels. What oil are you using?
 
I started getting that same problem when I had the clutch cable adjusted too tight at the case and at the handlebar.

I figure once I adjust it back to where it is supposed to be the problem of slippage will go away.

My new to me 750L did the same when I got on hit hard and short shifted from 3rd to 4th. recent oil change seemed to take care of it.
 
Sounds like a clutch adjustment issue. SHould be 1/8 inch play in the lever before the clutch arm on the ingine starts to move.
 
Just thought I'd update this, it turned out to be that I had the clutch way misudjusted. My bike dosn't have the stock handle bars (I got it from a salvage yard, although it wasn't a totaled bike I assume that the front had been damaged and they swapped difrent bars on to it) they are more of a straight sport bike style so the cable is probably not original to the bike either. Anyway, played with the adjustment and got it so now she grabs HARD. :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: It is always such a blast to have these new 2000+ crotch rockets pull up next to me and kinda smirk (they always tell me nice bike) at me, but the smirk is usually gone at the next stop light when they pull up and ask what the hell kinda engine I got in that thing because I either blow their doors off or pull an outstanding wheelie for a half to whole block while still acelerating hard.
 
Wow Krabysniper!!

I adjusted my cable and I still can't get it right. I still slip when I get on it hard before it warms up fully. It doesn't slip once it's warmed up though. Maybe it's time for an oil change too... :)
