Clutch wont disengage

My clutch was slipping so I replaced the clutch and clutch springs on my 82 GS750T and now the clutch wont disengage. When I put it in 1st gear the bike just lunges and dies. I made sure I torqued the spring bolts to 10lbs per specs. The new springs were not suzuki brand and they appeared to be thicker than the ones I took out. Any help

Get the right springs.

Would that be the problem? They were the same length just appeared to be a tad bit thicker.

Is your cable adjusted correctly?
Any chance the plates are thicker than stock plates?

they did look thicker but I assumed that was because they were new. Everything went in smooth, same as removal. Clueless now

Adjusted the cable per the manual instructions.

Are they Suzuki plates or aftermarket?

aftermarket. i got them from Z1.

did you remove the basket while you was inside?

if the basket slides outwards much it will disengage from the oil pump gear and when the big nut is tightened the bike will be direct drive....no slip even when the clutch is pulled in.
remove the pressure plate and see if the inner hub will spin any.
if not,
thats what happened.

note:
if you didn't remove the big nut...
disregard the above comments.

Did not remove the basket. Just R&R'd the clutch discs and springs

Something must have gotten misassembled when you put the clutch back together. I'd take it apart again and double check everything.

It took me approx 30-45 minutes.

My problem was slightly different - replaced the springs, worked fine at first, but then halfway through my next ride the clutch stopped disengaging. It seems the bearing between the clutch release rod and the pressure plate self destructed, possibly from misalignment when I put the new springs on (even though I never removed the clutch or pressure plate). I'd open it back up again and make sure everything is still lined up correctly in there, or you'll be looking for replacement parts - right, blowerbike?

FIXED. I installed the stock springs as recommended and it magically works now. It also needed very little adjustment after I buttoned everything up. Thanks to all that chimed in for your help. gotta love these old bikes and this board.
