A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello, i have searched this forum for hours trying to find an answer. If its here, i can't find it. I want to use the relay mod with a universal keyed switch, with a seperate starter button. So do i run hot (battery) to 30 or key ignition on to 30. Any help would be appreciated. In other words, not using on off switch.

I found this article useful:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/faq-emporium/117895-faq-relays-how-they-work-how-wire-up.html

From the article:

-30 = constant [positive (+)] power (usually wired directly to car battery)
-85 = coil ground (wired to the negative (-) battery terminal or any grounded metal panel in the car)
-86 = coil power (wired to the control source. could be a switch, or it could be the car's IGN or ACC circuit.)
-87 = switched [positive (+)] power output. (when the relay coil is powered, lead/pin 87 is connected to lead/pin 30)
-87a = [on 5 lead/pin relays only] this lead/pin is connected to lead/pin 30 when the coil is NOT powered.

In the above article, don't confuse 'coil ground', and 'coil power' with that of your ignition coils. It's referring to inside of the relay itself - this is an electromagnet switch.

To answer your question, 30 is the + battery connection (use a fuse here). Your key switch will connect to 86 and 85 will be connected to ground. *Note, you'll need to supply power to your key switch! Then 87 will be the power to your ignition coils.

So, when 86 and 85 make a loop (when the key switch is ON), 30 will be bridged with 87 supplying power to the ignition coils. When the key switch is off, the 30 to 87 bridge will be broken (removing power to the ignition coils).
