A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

While working to get my 750 road ready (just rebuilt the carbs so now I'm "the man") I discovered that one of my ignition coils has tapped out. In an effort to continue toward getting the bike started and tuning the carbs, I threw one of the coils from my KZ650 project on my GS. Long story short, it runs but the coil from the KZ doesn't allow my tank to seat properly. Not a big deal because I knew this is a temporary fix.
My question to you real motorcycle gurus is what my best bang for buck is on new coils. I think I'm going to just replace both of them right now instead of just the spent one. Is there anything wrong with a 5 ohm dyna coil?
Thanks

Dyna coils are decent quality, but there have been a few people reporting failures so not sure they are better than OEM per say. If you get Dyna's, I think the green ones are the appropriate choice for GS bikes using an electronic ignition. Black coils are for points bikes.

Just my opinion, but I'd look for some used coils instead of popping all the money for Dyna's. Dig out the wire and replace them with new. New plug cap too (NGK make good caps for a fair price). The OEM coils are very reliable and rarely fail. It can happen of course, your bike as reference, but it's not common at all.

Lastly, check the voltage getting to the coils as low voltage is a much bigger problem than bad coils. In fact, many times people blame the coils when there is nothing wrong with them.

Good luck

I have the ACCEL super coils on my bike, they have been on there since 82 I believe. Never a a days problem with them and they will still knock you down.

Thanks for the heads up. I failed to fill you guys in completely. The coils that are on the bike are not OEM. And there is a marking on them that suggest they may be very old a/m units.

I'm not sure, as you mentioned, that the coil is bad, but when I replaced it with the old Kawi coil, I regained spark for those two plugs.

+1 on this advise, it's what I did when one of mine was leaking waxy goo. Picked a set up on Ebay.

I have a set of ignition coils off a 82 gs850 - mounting bolts are about 4 inches apart. (the coils on my 650 have mounting bolt spacing of about 3.5 inches ) . they test out good and have stock bullet connectors with correct color! If you decide to go the cheap route, send me PM

PM sent.

Tom203,

I appreciate the sweet deal. I got the coils on Wednsday and installed them last night. It all fits well and runs well. Now to get the valve cover gasket replaced.
