    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Compatability between gs750/gs850

Hi,
I recently purchased a 1981 gs850g. The bike was dumped yesterday by my girlfriend in town... I'm just glad she is ok... she got a healthy taste of road rash even though she was wearing my leather jacket. The bike suffered from some mostly cosmetic damage and the rear left turn signal is busted, and one of the bolts holding the kick stand was sheared off.

So... a guy on craigslist is selling a parts bike... a 1981 gs750 for 50 bucks... what a steal! Anyway, I just want to know which parts are compatible? If you can direct me to another thread with this info or you know please help me out. Thanks ahead for your advice.

Welcome to GSR .. good to know your girlfriend will be OK.

Someone else will follow up on this.. but mechanically there are a lot of differences between the GS750 and the GS850.

I suspect that there are very few interchangeable parts .. turn signals may be if your 750 is an E model.

Post up a pic of your 850 though .. very well thought of model here at GSR
 
Good to know... one other thing... in the process of laying it down, my handle bars got jacked up almost like ape hangers... it was fun riding it home lol. I haven't seen the 750 except in a pic on CL so I'm unsure of the exact model. I think it's been sitting for 5 years... once I get it in the garage I'll let you guys know more about the bike. I may be able to salvage it.
 
Based upon the part numbers really nothing matches up... very disappointing. If I were to resell the 750 as a parts bike what do you guys think it's worth?

Value depends greatly on cosmetic condition. A gas tank could be worth $100 or $0, depending on condition.

I've parted out three bikes so far but honestly, it takes a lot of work taking photos, posting the ad, updating the ad, fussing with packing, shipping quotes, and sending out the parts. For the typical "parts bike" with challenged cosmetics, I'd say it will be worth about $250 or so after everything is all said and done.
 
Where are you Mr Mancub ? Which model of 750 ? An "E" or "L" ? Did you pick up the 750 parts bike already or are you just considering it ?

If it's an "L", I may be interested in a part or two......:)
 
I think the carb bodies would be the same, so you could at least get a spare set of diaphragms, although the jets would most likely be different.

The 750 would be a chain bike, so you wouldn't even be able to get a spare hub spline or shaftie parts.
 
That would be an "E" model. Not sure if the seats and/or covers are interchangable....you can check at www.alphasports.com and compare part numbers.

For $50 it's well worth parting. The carbs (cleaned) are worth that much. If you get it. I'd be interested in what condition the stator cover is in....:)
 
You can use 1 of the front turnsignals off the 750 on your 850 (picture doesn't show any rear signals). You'll need to use the angled metal bracket on your bike.

It looks like the starter is the same... I already have a spare starter for my 850... PO gave it to me when I purchased the bike... go figure... thanks for the advice on the turn signals and I'll get back to you guys on the state of the bike when I pick it up in a couple hours... I'll be sure to upload photos so you guys can see for yourself.
