converting neck to timken style bearings?

The neck bearings on my 1000G have a flat spot and are causing some erratic steering (to say the least). I am going to order new bearings, and I see that All Balls offers a timken style set of replacement bearings. Does anyone have experience swapping over to them?

Timken is a brand, rather than a style. Bearing manufacturers typically have some sort of cross reference sheet on thier sites and I would think the bearings you are looking for are standard. Just make sure you know the type of bearing and you should be all set.

Looking at the fiche I think you will find taper style bearings are already in there.Suzuki was quick to change over to that style. My 78 1000 has them stock.Had loads of fun getting the new ones on;)

Destroy the bearing cage, then take a die grinder and cut almost all the way through the bearings race. Back up the cut race on the steering stem and whack it with a cold chisel a few times. The race should crack and come off easily.

Or you can destroy the cage, heat the race with a torch and drive it off with an air chisel.

This has been documented a few times. Here's a post from when I did my 1000G. I think I used the All Balls kit, probably from Z1 Enterprises.

You are 100 percent correct. "Timken" designed and patented the tapered roller bearing (which I was refering to), and I was under the impression that my steering head contained loose or caged roller bearings. All Balls lists a "conversion kit" to tapered roller bearings, so thats where I got my info from.

Now, I need to find a kleenex....er.....facial tissue.....:)

I forgot to confirm that you definitely already have tapered rollers in there.

Thanks! I've replaced tapered roller bearings before, and I don't like it one bit. I will just order a replacement set and get to it. Thanks to all for the responses.

;) I made a xerox, err copy of this thread. Sorry if I came of as kinda "assish". Hard to show intent in posts sometimes.
