    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I searched a bunch of threads and didn't find my answer so here's my question:

What oil do you cold weather riders use?

My GS300 starts right up under 65 degrees but shifting is tough for the first mile or so. It also runs rough, but I figure that's just cause I don't waste gas warming it up. I start it and go to work.

I'm using regular 10W-40 now. I figured I'd switch to 5W-40 synthetic when the weather gets colder. Yes, I do plan on riding until there's ice on the roads. I used to ride in the winter when I had my on/off road Suzuki back in the 80s.

Down to 36-40 degrees F I have used rotella 15w40, amsoil 20w50 and soon to try rotella synthetic 5w40.
5w40 may not a bad idea in really cold temps
 
5W anything (multi vis.)

cold is cold and starting is a hassle until some heat is developed 1 way or another.

internal or externally light bulb,heating pad, blanket, ether starting fluid etc...

BTW. auto synthetic can be tough on wet clutch stiction . just stick with good clean regular oil like= rotella, kendall, kawasaki brand, or any m/c specific oil for the sheer factor caused by the transmission tolerances (my advice)

I'm with you on riding until the roads ice up. Last year I had Amsoil 10w-40 motorcycle oil in my 700 and this year it'll be the 5w-40 Rotella Synthetic. I rode down to about 25F, past that I couldn't keep my visor and glasses free from fogging. I only had my bike fail to fire up once when it was really cold..................... seems like if you can keep the charge up on your battery and the intake and ignition systems are sound, oil doesn't matter too much as long as you ain't running straight 50W. I would keep the RPMs down for the 1st 5 miles or so of a ride - to give the oil a chance to warm before I revved it harder......ut I've always done that no matter what the ambient temp was.
 
My commute is 2 miles, that's why I got the 300. No need for a big bike.
