Hi
I have a brand new regulator rectifier (Made in China I think the model is Procom ESR 770 or JZ RR 77) which i bought for my Suzuki GT 550. I have since sold the GT and have the regulator still. I have a 1982 GSX 1100 EZ which has a bung regulator rectifier. My question is could i use the new regulator for the GT on the GSX. The part looks identical except for the wires coming out of it. When looking at the China made regulator for the GSX there are 3 yellow and one red wire which is in a 4 pin plug and a black earth wire. The china made rectifier for the GT has the same wiring except for an additional 2 wires a green and brown in a 2 pin plug. I'm guessing the green and brown had something to do with points. Could i use the Gt regulator on my GSX?

Any help appreciated

Richard

Most likely you can use it. You need to figure out what the brown and green wires are for though. Might be a sense wire and an extra ground?

Rewiring the charging system to bypass the headlamp loop is strongly recommended. If you don't know what I'm talking about please look around on the forum and check Basscliff's website for more info. Basically, you want to rewire the charging system and bypass the factory harness excepting maybe the power return from the R/R.

Did the GT series have separate rectifiers and regulators? If so, your unit is probably just the rectifier, you will still need a regulator.

The current thinking on "best R/R" is a unit from Polaris, which is a series-style R/R, rather than the stock shunt style.
Cost is about $80 here in the USA, not sure what it would be where you are.

The 76 gt likely had an alternator style charging system (brushes feeding a revolving field ); if so that r/r won't work on the 82- get a series r/r and improve your odds.

Yep, just checked the fiche on the GT550, it did have an alternator, not a stator/magnet setup. Those extra wires on your Regulator would be to control current to the field, which is what controls the voltage.

For your '82, you will need a different R/R. Again, the current favorite is the Polaris.
