Cracked oil filter cover

So maybe a novice mistake/question but I recently got a gs1100e engine running and it blew a huge crack in the oil filter cover. When I got the bike it had a aftermarket oil pressure cover with outlets for a oil cooler. Just to get it fired up I blocked those with plugs. It ran for about 30 seconds and popped the oil filter cover. So my question is did I cause to much pressure in the oil filter or is something else? I did notice the filter the part store gave me sticks out further than the surface of the cover is that correct? Sorry for the long winded question.
Thanks Curtis

Wow, being that the oil pressure on those bikes are high volume low pressure it's hard to see the pressure has caused that crack.
Are you sure that the filter is the correct one if all else fails there should be a pressure release valve built in the filter.
I am wondering if someone has fitted the cover wrongly and cracked it or the incorrect filter with the same results.

Maybe someone did something to the oil feed ports in the engine so the pressure would feed into the modified cover ports?

I'm pretty sure it is I changed it before I fired it that doesn't mean the parts store guy didn't grab the wrong one :/ but I replaced the oil pressure housing with a stock one but I'm still kind of gun shy on starting it again. Those covers are not plentiful hahaha. How would I go about checking to see if some PO did something to the oil ports? Gaskets are cheaper than engines.

I can't see oil pressure doing that and even if it could you would have to blank the return port to the main oil gallery. It has over or crooked tightening written all over it. Have you got a spring between the cover and the filter and how long is the filter?

Yes I have the spring in between. The filter I guess seems a little long it sticks out further than the gasket surface of the cover

Any chance those studs are replacements? They should be 6 mm iirc and they look too good.
The holes in the cover at 5 and 7 o'clock look to have some contact and the hole at 10 o'clock looks a bit elongated.
With the filter and o ring out will the cover slip on easily?

I haven't tried with a new cover but the broken one slipped back on pretty easy I didn't have to persuade it to much just a little wiggle to get it but it's not bound up
