Sorry for sounding noob, but I'm sure everyone here did at one point.

I've been browsing Ebay for some new and/or replacement parts for my GS650g, and I always come across these crank case filters. I have no idea what the purpose of these are? Are they for performance, or just something for bling?

Could someone enlighten me.

Thank you

number 24 in this pic is a crank case screen that filters large stuff from getting sucked up into the pump, but its made of metal and you just clean it....... number 7 is a oil filter for your bike. Most of us go to a parts web site to get these referances. The one that I use all the time and where I got this from is http://www.flatoutmotorcycles.com/fiche_section_detail.asp you have to select your bike from the drop down menu

Sounds like you're talking about the filters you use when you go to pods since you don't have a vent line feeding into the airbox anymore.

I mounted mine under my seat so I wasn't sniffing blowby. I sniffed enough glue already in my life. :?

I'm going to lose the filter and just conceal a hose running out to the back of the bike. The oil mess under the seat is too much.

Just try to never kink the breather hose while running the engine. You'll spring oil leaks like you never saw before.

I forgot to reconnect mine and it must have kinked like you say but unsure. Anyway I rode it out on the freeway for a quick test ride after replacing the head gasket. Well everything was fine untill a couple miles down the road I smell oil (big nose works sometimes:-D) all of a sudden all hell breaks loose on the right side as oil shoots out the chrome cam end caps like one of those round lawn sprinklers. I guessed immediatly how but not why and quickly killed the engine at 70 mph held the clutch in and coasted off to the side of the road. After yelling a few unrepeatable phrases at the bike, I removed the chrome cover to see the rubber plug had blown outward. I pushed it back in and found a suitable pebble to put between it and the half moon rubber plug to hold it in place with the chrome cover. Then checking that there was enough oil to make it home, because I had a great deal all over my right pant leg as you can immagine. Upon further examination I noticed as you had mentioned that the breather hose was not connected, hooked it back up and later removed the pebble (knock on wood) all is well so far. \\:D/

The crankcase filters you see are for when you run pods. I ran mine back under the seat into a little catch cup made from a paint can lid. Works great. I just wipe it out about every 500 miles or so.
