If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Crankcase Assembly - How do I NOT seal the bearings to the cases?

I'm almost ready to put the crankcase halves together, but I'm not sure how to avoid getting the threebond sealant on the crank shaft and counter balance shaft bearing surfaces?

Transmission is easy, they're the outside of the bearing shells so they don't move (circled in green).

The crank shaft and counter balance shaft are what worry me (circled in red).

Any ideas or advice on how to avoid this?

Hey Pete,

Get a small acid brush or similar and use that to apply the sealer. Just a thin layer is all that's needed.

Good luck.

Hey Pete, Follow ED's (Ness's) advice to the letter. "HE's DA MAN" on ALL things mechanical. I followed his instructions twice (not his fault, I had to pull it apart to check bottom end for mysterious noise) and no oil leaks either time. Follow the advice he gave in my thread and you will have no probs. Everything will work out OK.

Cheers Ed and Don, and yep, I've seen Ed put many useful tidbits of information around the place so plan to follow that indeed :)

Ed, is a small normal paintbrush ok? I did a Google search on acid brushes today and maybe I missed something but I couldn't see the difference...

At least I believe I've done one thing right which is buy the good Threebond sealant :D

Pete, this diagram is from a KZ400 Twin manual, but gives the idea of where to place the sealant.

Hope it helps.

Cheers again Don, that definitely helps!

The bit that concerns me is getting it too thick too close to the bearings, causing the sealant to squeeze onto the bearing when I torque the bolts down.

So I guess going by all this that if I'm careful and keep it thin as everyone keeps saying then I should be good to rock and roll :)

Hi Pete,

An acid brush is just a cheap throw away paint brush - they sell them in bulk packs.

You don't want to get sealer on the bearings but no crisis if a little gets on there.

Did you make sure the dowel holes are clean so the case halves slide together easily?

And did you look for that oil port O-ring yet? If your engine has this there will be a recess in the cases for the O-ring. I've been sent lots of wrong parts from Suzuki before so those small O-rings might just be a mistake.

Cheers Ed, I believe I should have a small paint brush around that will do the trick then.

As far as the O ring goes, I believe I've got it sorted (in the other thread).

There's no O ring between the cases on the 450 and no recesses I can find for one either, and trust me I looked hard

Thanks again for your help on this, should be able to get my crankcases together one night this week now :D

Well done pete. We look forward to pictures of the finished product.

Stay tuned on my rebuild thread tomorrow morning... I would guess that would be tonight for you US/Canadian lot I would think...
