G'day everyone, just bought my first gs project, a 82 gsx1100e (gs1100e in the states). And i can see this website being damn helpful!

Anyway I've stripped everything off the bike and pulled the cylinder block off. Everything seems all good and 3 of the bores seem smooth. My only concern is that in one of the cylinders there was a bit of surface rust which I've attempted to polish off with scotchbrite. It feels smooth and there's no visible pitting but i cant get rid of the black stain. I think that a bit of moisture got in when I degreased the engine, and it was a week before i took the block off so its only formed in a week.
My thought is that as long as it's smooth it should be fine..
Just wondering what you guys think??

If it's going to be a while before you get it back together, smear some oil on it and don't worry about it.

If you are putting it back together today, smear some oil on it and don't worry about it.

I have put some motors together with some ugly bores and had them seal up fine. Don't over do it with the hone, maybe 20 seconds with the cylinder wet with solvent or wd40 and then stop.honing to long is the same as putting lots of miles on the cylinder. The more you hone, the wider the ring end gap. Don't focus on that one area of the cylinder either. Travel up and down over the whole bore for 20 seconds and what you end up with is what you run.

Where do you get a cylinder honing tool ?? I saw one at Sears, is there any particular type, model or otherwise that you guys would recommend??

I'll be in the same position as Brad P soon, & want to be prepared...

Thanks,

mike

If for rebuilding without over boring. I feel stones are too course and can scratch the bores. Like most here I feel the ball hone is the way too go. Lube the bore down with 30 wt. motor oil. Use 280-320 and go fast thru the bore back and forth about 60 times a minute. For about 20-45 sec. is all you will need and will not open the bore any measurable amount. I have used this method many times and never a problem. Your rings will seal. After honing wipe down bores with a laquor thinner soaked paper towel untill you can pass it thru and it comes out CLEAN. Lube the bore slightly and assemble. Like has been said..not to worry about the flash surface rust , hone with ball hone and you are good to go.
