    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Disk Brake Upgrade

I am considering the purchase of a 1979 GS1000N with the wire wheels and single disk brake in front. I want to upgrade to the "E" style mag wheel with the double disk in front. Are there any considerations in doing that concerning the front or the rear. In the front, do I need to consider different Forks, Master Cylinder, etc.

If I am not mistaken you can install dual disks on your wire wheel. Also check if your fork has the mounting holes for a second caliper. I do have a 1979 with cast wheels and brakes and master cylinder. Calipers and MC will need a rebuild I have no idea what kind of shape the disks and pads are in. I would be willing to part with some or all of it if you are interested.

I would strongly consider doing a dual pot caliper upgrade that Salty_Monk provides. He is currently on a road trip to Nor Cal but should be back by next week.

gearhead just installed same and found some good quality Chinese rotors that he says are working well. Check with him; here is the link. That price is very good as in comparision EBC rotors can be $400 per set.

Good Ft brakes are a must. :lol:
 
There's not much braking to be gained from going from the stock single disc to the stock dual discs.

You can bolt another disc to the spoke front wheel, but there's no lug on the right fork for a caliper

The best thing is to do the Twinpot mod as noted above. I did it to my 78 spoke wheel bike and the braking power doubled (or more). I did mine for about $150, but I was able to find another GS 1000 disc from Bruce.
