I have an 81 1100 that's been parked since 2001, much of it outdoors unfortunately. I've had the engine running, which is a story for another posting. For now, I seem to have the much discussed 'stuck clutch' problem. I tried freeing it up with the various methods seen here - even managed a couple burnouts in my garage, but it still has way too friction when disengaged. So I pulled it apart and measured everything. The drive plates are all at 2.9mm with claw widths of 15.7mm, which meet spec. The driven plates (steel) all measure 1.9mm, which is below the 1.94 min spec in my Clymer manual. I'm confused why the steel would be worn below spec, so I'm wondering if someone with a factory manual can confirm the spec. My springs are also at the limit of 38.5, so should I just buy all new plates and springs? The basket seems fine, no obvious grooving, and it turns freely and quietly. With the plates oiled and assembled, I can turn the rear wheel in fifth gear with the clutch pulled in, but it is extremely difficult. Then I can feel an engagement point about midway through the lever stroke, and it stops me from turning the wheel any further. The bike has 20,000 miles.
