    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does anyone know if there is a replacement part number for the 80mph speedo for my 82 GS 750 E?

I would assume that maybe a canadian (kms) or a UK piece might work, but would a speedo from a 79 or some other model also fit.

It would be nice to know exactly how over the speed limit I am going

I looked at a 140mph unit out of a 78 750. It's close, but there are some issues... From what I recall (I got sidetracked and didn't finish) the body doesn't match the 82 housing so you'd have to cut some part of the housing for it to fit. Also, the tripto reset comes in from the side, so the top button would be useless.
 
Try one from an 83. The 82/83 gauge sets from an 1100 and for the 82/83 Katana are the same from one year to the next except the 83 goes to 140, might be the same for the 750.
 
I think your 81 gauge set is the same as the 82, any chance you'd want to check since you have both available?
 
Do you really need to know how much passed the speed limit you are going? I've got an 85 miler unit on my '81, and I've yet to see the use of a 140 except to say I was going "XXX"mph. It's mostly about bragging rights over what your cluster says. But, if you must, there are ways to replace yours to fit the bill. I've also heard of people using bicycle speedo's that can register a high speed. That would eliminate the need to find a new cluster.

I agree that there's no 'need' to have the 140 unit, which is why I never completed the swap on mine when I found out I'd have to hack my cluster up a bit for the earlier unit. However, I get annoyed every time I crack the throttle open and suddenly peg the speedo when I'm fractionally into third gear. I briefly considered using a cheap bicycle type unit (I've even got one in the basement that would probably work just fine) but if I'm going to go through the effort to make it work I'd just as soon make it look OEM.
 
Certainly you can figure out your speed from the tachometer as well.
 
Yes, but it's hardly ideal. That's actually being discussed in another thread right now.
 
Never having had to put up with a "restricted speedometer", just wanted to know, if you go fast enough will the needle break?

But this bit is funny, our wonderful goverment is now thinking of doing this.

No it won't. It is connected to a piece of steel that hovers over a magnet that is turned by the speedo cable. The faster you go, the faster the magnet spins and pulls the steel with it.

Thanks, I was not aware of the model year changes for Suzukis, this being my first one.

No, this is not a big deal, although I do spend a large enough amount of time around the 80 or so mark since my workday commute is 40 miles one way, mostly highway. It would just be nice to know and if there is a stock piece that will fit, why bother with a bike speedo or a tach conversion factor?
