Does a 1983 GS1100E use exhaust gaskets?

Hi, I have a 1983 gs1100e, it has a Delkevic 4 into 1 exhaust. I need to replace my oil pan gasket, and from what Ive seen I need to remove exhaust header pipes. I'd like to be prepared and order any cylinder head to exhaust header gaskets I need so I can get the job done in a single day. My gs1100 service manual shows a picture with 2 'exhaust pipe plates' (gaskets?) on the 2 center header pipes.

Does the 83 gs1100e use these 2 'exhaust pipe plates' on the center header pipes? Are they re-usable? Does the Delkevic exhaust use these same pipe plates, or does it take its own delkevic brand gaskets?

Sometimes you can reuse them, but best to have some new ones handy.

The "plates" you mention (#5 on the diagram) are the halves of metal retainers used under the "clamp" (#3) on the middle two pipes; the "clamp" presses against the retainers, which bear on the raised rim of the pipe. The gaskets are number 2 on the diagram, and that's what you need.

Anyway, yes, you will need new gaskets for your aftermarket system. You will not need new "plates", and it's quite likely that these aren't even used with your aftermarket exhaust system.

I always keep a few sets of the gaskets on hand, so order eight or 12. Sometimes you need to take the exhaust off again, or one doesn't seal correctly. THere are aftermarket versions of these gaskets that work fine as well.

Also, make triple-sure you get the old ones out. They're surprisingly hard to see, and you sort of have to pick them loose with a screwdriver to get them out. Quite a few people get the mistaken idea that their exhaust was installed without gaskets somehow because everything is squashed and covered in carbon.

When you install them, it can help to squish them slightly oval by hand so that they will stay in the bore while you're getting the exhaust into place.
