Dunlop D404's

Was on my way to work and well it happened back tire went flat.(slowly thank god! felt the softness and slowed down) Yes i was trying to make it a few more weeks on the tires. I know they were getting to that point of replacement. I see reviews that are 50/50 about the 404's. They say they handle great in rain and dry but dont have a good tread life. So i want to ask ya guys here being we are GS owners. Now i am a small man 5'7" and at 125 pounds. So the little GS450L fits well for me. With a light bike and a light guy do ya think they will be fine for me to run on this bike? Does the weight of me and the bike make big differences in tread where? Total weight with me on the bike is about 550 pounds. I see that guys with big bikes and seem to be bigger men then i am have more complaints about them and guys with smaller bikes seem to do ok with the 404's. I dont want to get this in a tire brand war please. Just looking to see if any of ya here have ran them and want to hear what you think. Got to make my mine up quick as it is going in the shop Sat morning for tires. (Front and back) I do ride in the rain and put 50 miles a day round trip to work. Yes i ride as much as i can on the weekends as well. Just this season (first full season on the bike) i have about 4,500 miles on it.

PS I am not an aggressive rider! I like to just ride. Not into high speed. 75 is fast enough for me. Yes i have had it up past the 85 mark on the speedo but its just to see what it felt like and how fast she would do.

I don't have any experience with the 404s, but many of us are using Shinko 230 or 712 as an inexpensive, yet decent, tire.

You can get a pair of either one for about $125-135 delivered to your door from Motorcycle Superstore.

I ran a set of Dunlop D404's on an 1100 Goldwing.
They were okay - just okay..
They seemed to wear faster than I liked and were a little bit slippy in rain.

I would not buy them again as I feel their technology to be older.

Currently I am running Michelin Commander II's on the GS850
Very sticky and quiet. I like them - Longevity is yet to be determined.

I have run the Shino Tourmaster 230's on a GS650 and really liked them as well
At the price of those tires one could replace them every year so as to have fresh rubber all the time.

I've run D404's on a few bikes. Overall I think they are decent value for the wear and performance. I don't typically ride in the rain, so I can't give a rain report, but they gave decent mileage on both a Z1 and a GS1000, and always felt steady at speed and predictable in corners.

I am sure that is true, probably what he had on hand to actually fit your bike. Next time buy the tires online and take them in somewhere. No experience with the 404's myself but probably could have gotten a better tire for less money

I am running 404s after tossing the banana skin Spitfires (which must have been very old) and they are fine.

+1, most likely moving stock.

Next time buy the tires online and take them in somewhere.

Or do them yourself with irons. Our skinny bias ply tires aren't that hard to deal with compared to the wide radials and are a very reasonable project to do in the garage on a saturday afternoon.

I know that a few dealership parts depts. have a 30%-50% manufacture discount on dunlops and a few others during July/August. Just replaced a rear 404 that was plugged.
