If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hey guys. Decided to do a frame off restoration of my 81' 550T. I want it to look nice and shiny. The engine is looking kind of sad so I'm going to soda blast it and repaint it. Which method should I use? I've heard good things about both the Dupli-Color and the VHT system. Also, I need to touch up some areas of the frame (mostly at the welds) where it has rusted. What paint should I use there? If I want the frame to shine a little bit, should I use a clearcoat and if so what kind? Sorry for all of the questions. Thanks guys!

Well I can't answer any of your questions except for the clear. I've been doing a lot of research regarding DIY paint jobs and it seems that the best clear you can get is the spraymax 2 part clear. Unlike other spray clears, it's a 2 part urethane, similar to what the professionals spray, and should be very strong, resists chemicals, and always looks like it's wet. Well at least that's what I've read, I have yet to use it. But you can read the reviews on that site, and they are all positive.

Search for "engine paint". Several good threads on it with many opinions. I think people consider VHT pretty good. I had good results with it. I think Por-15 is a favorite of some users for the engine also. Make sure you cure it per the instructions. I'm a fan of powder coat for the frame. Shop around, and you might able to get it done (frame) for $150 or so.

I personally like VHT..a guy I work with that builds Prostreet Drag motors swears by it..I used both the black and silver on my Bike..

I'd used VHT for years on my race motors without ever being very happy with the results. A couple of years ago I was put onto Duplicolour and I'm very happy with the results.
It seems to have more "colour solids" than VHT and gives the appearance of a thicker coat.

PPG has what you need. The nice thing about using better products is that you have support. You can have any questions you have answered by your local distributor.

I've used this stuff and it is great, but unless you have good ventilation and the proper safety equipment I wouldn't use it . This is a true 2 part paint and it contains Isocyanates, VERY nasty stuff. An air feed respirator is called for, organic compound masks don't cut it with this stuff.

I've had good results with Duplicolor engine clear, tuff finish but like any rattle can you have to be careful with chemical resistance.

I've used VHT on the last 3 or 4 engines with no issues, however, this time around it failed....badly. While trying to get the engine to run quite a bit of gas had spilled out of the carbs and it dissolved the paint on the block. It is a mess and willneed redoing.

I'm looking at different alternatives now.

Its a pain having to redo it.

I just painted a motorcycle tank and side plates. I used Duplicolor Lacquer, it looks great but is very soft. I suggest using this clear in the link provided, it's right up there with the spray gun stuff or so they say. I haven't used it yet but plan to. It is the two part and is supposed to be hard. You can use Duplicolor Enamel, it gets pretty hard after a few days of curing and should do well for you. I don't have a gun and have to figure out a way to do things on the cheap. I like duplicolor due to the fan spray nozzle, and it works very well for a can.

From reading what alot of the guys on here who do engine builds, I think PJ 1 is a prefered paint for engines. I go only by what I have read as I have yet to paint my engine. This will be what I use.

I used Dupli-color clear on my side covers and they turned out OK. Until I left the bike outside and it got a lil wet. The water that ran off the seat discolored the side covers. Have a look. I used another clear for my tank and didn't have ANY problems. I can't remember who made it but I'm gonna use it again.
