If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Dyna coil mount

Gentlemen, I have attempted to solidly mount my Dyna green coils on my GS1100es, only to find that the coil mounting bolt heads foul on the low voltage terminals! Have any of you experienced this same difficulty and how did you resolve it... shy of mounting the coils with zip-ties! Thanks in advance, Paul

There was a gent that made alum mounts to relocate the coils higher to allow easier removal of the valve cover.

I bent and redrilled the mounting brackets to mount my bandit coils on my ES.

On my ES, I ground the frame mounts a bit to get the coils to sit correctly.

Seems like I made a set of standoffs using hardware store pieces. It's been a while.

Thanks for all the replies fellas, but I need to post up some pictures so that you can more clearly see my problem... Keep 'em coming though! Paul

Clearance issues!

Clearance issues!

This is what I'm talking about! There is no way this is going to be a trouble free installation. It will eventually short the coil low voltage connections to ground.

I had the same issue. The plug wire boots were going to dig into the mounting tabs as well. The front mounting bolt was parallel with the connections instead of perpendicular.

I ended up using the rearward mounting bolt as normal. I think then I used the front mounting bolt (without spacer) and the nuts locked together at the bottom of the threads as a standoff, wrapped in heat shrink or tape. Then I angled the front toward the outside (just a little), securing it with 2 zip ties per. The first tie between the mounting hole and coil at the angle I wanted. The second from coil to frame to pull it really tight. The front mounting bolt rests on the tab and has clearance from the connections. Worked out great and is solid. Can't find a picture for you, sorry.

I also coated my connections with liquid rubber, just as insurance.

Are there supposed to be some kind of spacer between the tabs on the frame and the factory coils? Mine are missing. Could someone give me some dimensions? Tah. Paul

The spacers from mine were 1/2" long. The bolt/coil mount/spacer were held together by a nut leaving about 1/2" of bolt left. This was set on the mounting tab and secured with a washer and another nut underneath.

Thanks for that, fellas. Looks like I'll be going back to the drawing board for a new (rev. 3) coil mount design!

I asked the folks at the Tech. Dept. at Dyna if they ever considered clocking or indexing the low voltage terminals 90 degrees out from the mounting points, and I was essentially told to pound sand... We've been doing this for 30 years and we aren't about to change now!

Go to your local electric supply house and get four all thread couplers of the appropriate size, a stick of all thread, nuts and lock washers. Take a coil so you are sure the all thread will fit through the hysteresis plates running through the coils. You should be able to make standoffs just about like what came on the stock coils. Use the end holes. I set my plug wires facing to the back of the bike because that was the only way the stock primary wires would reach.

Excellent idea. slayer, if you take a coil with you, you will probably find something just a bit thinner, since the all thread will most likely only be in SAE sizes.
And be sure and get lock washers for all the nuts.

Gentlemen, thanks for all the ideas and input. After finding out that the coils were to be mounted on spacers, I made yet another trip to the hardware store and sourced some plastic or Teflon spacers. Mounted the coils as the factory did... I suppose. The plastic makes a great nonconductive spacer so there was no interference with the low voltage terminals! Between the relay mod and brand new dyna coils and ignition, my old hotrod runs like it should!

Thanks again for all your help. What a great resource! Paul
