I picked up a dyna III with the intentions of putting it on my 1982 GS1100GK. Are there any traps or special issues I need to be prepared for?

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

depending on you current ign you may have to retro fit a mechanical advance unit

Yes, it is also looking for one of this Dyna III.
But really hope to see a photo with the installed dyna advance unit for easy reference.
Or some photos, show up the step by step of installing the pick-up coils plate and the advance unit.

Dyna does not make an advance unit. The Dyna III uses the stock Suzuki mechanical advance. Most Suzuki bikes from 1980 and older had mechanical advance units. 1981 and newer had electronic advance. If your bike is 1981 or newer, you will need to retrofit an early model mechanical advance to it to be able to use the Dyna III.

The more I think about it, I guess it was in 83 suzuki added an electronic advance. Not sure if they did for all models though. I know my 81 750 did not have a mechanical advance.

I just wanted to add that my 1982 450 definitely has the mechanical advancer, so it looks like the mechanical/electronic split may have been in 82/83. But, keep your eyes open, because who knows whether they decided to upgrade all models simultaneously.
You can guess why I know....my igniter died. Looking for a replacement to avoid paying for a new Dyna S. We'll see.....

Along these same lines, would the mechanical advance from say a 79 GS750 work on the 83 gs1100gk? If not which ones would? I have also aquired a Dyna III that I'm going to install in the next week. So I would like to know if the advance that I have is going to work or do I need to find another one.

My 81GS750 that I parted DID have a mechanical advance!!! YOU will most likley have to remark the timing marks, so it is mandatory to check TDC against the reference marks on the advance mech .The points style advance unit is the best bet as it is shorter (and may clear the cover?) than the advance from an electronic ign. That is what the funny looking spacer is for in the dyna kit. If the cover doesn't clear you will have to make a spacer. On the later models GK etc Someone said it is necessary to make sure the adv unit fits correctly on the crank, file to fit if necessary

Hi earl, I am having trouble with my 82 gkz. If I plug the "black box" in then the white wire from the coil looses power, the other side of the coil will light up my test light just fine. I have tried a couple of boxes but they just do the same thing ie not fire on 1 and 4. Is a dyna the only answer and will a dyna s series work. Signed frustrated. GTMike
