    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Dyna S alternative - GM HEI on a former points ign. bike?

After shelling out a ton of cash for two Dyna S ignition pickup/modules in two years for the same bike (Dyna 1-4 pickup died on the 77 GS550 just out of warranty), I am looking to probably upgrade the points on my GS750 to the GM HEI ignition module mod.

What I was wondering, whether or not the early 80's models that switched over to electronic ignition would swap the ignition pickup parts directly into a points engine? And if so, do they still use a mechanical advancer similar to the points setup? I am looking for the most reliable electronic ignition setup and a better spark, with less maintenance than points. What factory parts are the best bet for me to look for?

Is there a big advantage to go with a different set of coils at this time as well?

I think I have seen reports of using the '80 or '81 pickuips on earlier bikes. They still use the same mechanical advance unit. I don't remember if it was '82 or '83 when they started putting the advance into the ignitor. You could probably search the parts fiche on '82 and ''83 bikes to see whether they compare to the '81s.

I believe the ignition signal generator plate is a direct swap on the 550 and 1000, not sure about the 750 but suspect that one as well. You need to get the type intended for use with a mechanical advance - as Dale suggests, some of the later GS bikes went to incorporating the advance curve into the ignitor.
 
Yep- ACCEL gives me perfect fire. That equals a perfect ride ;)
I was speaking of the coils- Dyna brand just not reliable in my use.

After only a year and having some misfiring issues, the 1-4 pickup on my wife's Dyna-S just died. I read online a lot of other people who have had the same problem, but have also read of other people who say they are dead reliable.

I wanted to go with the GM HEI mod because it makes sense that putting the ignition's electronic controls components inside the engine would obviously get really hot, so no wonder the Dyna stuff craps out on some people. Having the electronics mounted outside of the engine on a heat sink plate makes way more sense to me.

I also noticed a trend of more people complaining about the 1-4 pickup on the Dyna dropping out, and I speculate that this may be due to the fact that the front of the engine there gets more direct cool airflow than the back. maybe I'm going out on a limb there since they are both in a sealed compartment together.
 
I also wondered if the Dyna dying on her GS550 had to do with a charging system issue I just discovered - the bike only charges at 11.9 volts, should be 13.6-14.2. Time to upgrade to the ElectroSport Industries Regulator/Rectifier that regulates all 3 phases, and check to see if the stator is done for.

I wondered if the low voltage could have stressed the ignition components?
 
I had the same Dyna coils and S ignition on my bike for 20 years. Failed last year and they sent new stuff at half price... Good stuff and company in my book.

Best company I have ever worked with. Everyone knows me by name, know most of us who have "retro-fitted" the Dyna-S in.

Sent me everything I needed that didn't come in the kit that I bought from a supplier FOR FREE. (washers, nuts, etc.) No shipping.

Even sent some extra decals I requested :D
