    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I am trying to make sure i install the dyna ds3-2 i got for my 81 650g correctly. I followed the instructions, but just had a couple questions for those who have done it.

On my old ignition the wires are blue/green which are then plugged into a matching green/blue plug. Then a separate green wire for the 12v power.

The dyna has a black/white wire and then a red wire for 12v. So with the dyna, which ignition wire goes to the blue and which to the green that is on the bike ? ( im assuming the red goes to the same spot i had the 12v wire hooked to before?)

Also i just wanted to make sure i don't have to adjust the timing on my bike since ive replaced this.

Thanks for the help, im dying to get this bike on the road.

Did you get the Dyna S install instructions with the unit. Those instructions show how to wire it up fairly simply I think. I have a copy if you need it. Let me know.
 
Hmm i do have the diagram and the instructions. The white shows it going to 1-4 coil. The black shows going to 2-3 coil. The instructions say to: "connect the black and white wires to the receptacles where the original points connected, matching the colors." I guess im just confused because i thought that meant to connect them to the blue/green existing plug on the bike where the original ignition used to plug in. Sorry i hope that makes sense
 
I ran the white and black wires to their respective coils straight from the dyna s had to add extensions as the wires werent long enough.
 
Ok cool, easy enough. Total noob question but do i connect the wires to the negative or positive terminal on the coils. :-k as you can tell wiring this type of thing is foreign to me. Just dont wont to ruin this new ignition somehow
 
(As in the white goes to the + or - terminal on the 1-4 coil, and the black goes to the + or - on the 2-3 coil?)
 
they go to the negative on each coil and the o/w is the positive feed on the coils which is where the red wire from the dyna-s is spliced into with the blue clip thingy supplied with the dyna-s system.white to - on 1-4 black to - on 2-3 this is my first introduction to electrics also.

once it is all connected turn the ignition on and if you have a test light connect the clip to the white wire connected at the coil and ground the other end to the engine somewhere and rotate the crank by hand and the light should come when 1-4 is at the first timing mark rotate so the timing mark is at the full advance mark turn the rotor by hand and the light should come on then if not rotate the dyna-s plate till it does.This way you dont have to start the bike to see if everything is correct less chance of stuffing things up cheers.

I, too, just installed a Dyna. The test light thing is driving me nuts though.

I have a test light and confirmed that it works. When I tried to use it to time the ignition, however, it never worked. Clipped ground to frame, attached light probe to white wire connection where it plugged into the harness (i.e., under the seat not the small wire on the plate). Turned the engine but light never came on. I know the ignition is being trigger though, because when I pull the No. 4 plug and ground it to the engine, it sparks as I turn the motor.

Why do I fail so hard?
 
I totally skipped the static timing and grabbed a friend's inductive timing light. On most installs that I've seen "correct" timing is very close if not all the way to the end of the slots. Here's a pic of mine:

Make sure the rotor is free to advance and not clamped down by the spacer!

Sorry i am not sure on the timing of these bikes, because mine doesn't require it with the install of the dyna. However this may help you get it if you haven't read it already.

Btw i plugged the wires directly to my coils. Instantaneous combustion in a good way! Thanks for the help guys.

I wouldn't think you'd need to ground that. What's the resistance of the primary leads on your coils? What size was the fuse?

Let's make sure we have this straight:

1. Coil relay output to BOTH O/W coil wires AND the Dyna red lead.
2. Dyna white wire to coil white wire (whichever one has the white ground)
3. Dyna black wire to other coil black ground

The Dyna S grounds itself against the block. Make sure you unplug the ignitor, if not remove it completely.

ok, removed the ignitor and connected the black and white wires to the proper wires that go to the proper coils. I am using a 10w fuse on the inline fuse holder on the relay. I'm getting 3 ohms on the primary side of the coils. I have a feeling there may be a kink in the wires I made for the relay so I'm going to check those.
