Is there any benefit to installing a Dyna S ignition on a GS which came with an electronic CDI ignition stock, like the 80 GS1000E? I'm replacing the stock coils with Dyna units (green 3 oHM?), the spark plug wires with Dyna wires, and the plugs with some new NGK iridiums.

Thanks.

Hey 80GS,

Can't answer your question specifically, but I installed a set of Accell coils and wires on my 83 GPz 750 and the difference was noticeable. Hotter spark equals more complete combustion equals better acceleration. At least thats the theory, anyway.

I have a set of the Dyna green coils (don't know what ohmage) that were on the bike when I got it, and it goes pretty good. An advantage? Don't really know other than they hold a phenomenal reputation and are accessible (vs. stock stuff).

Nope, you will see no performance improvement at all over a stock ignition.
The usual reason for changing is if you have an old style points ignition and want to upgrade to a maintenance free system, or need to replace a burned out electronic ignition system. There is no difference in performance between Accel and Dyna coils and I have noted no difference between stock coils and those two. Also, the iridium plugs may last a little longer, but there will not be any performance improvement over a stock NGK D9EA. Been that route also. :-)

I may have noticed a difference because I had just spent 160 bucks on the kit, so it may have been more mental than any real difference. Perhaps the one original fried coil contributed too...

Yup. If you can't find a working used one on eBay, Suzuki will try to sock you for anywhere from $250-$450 for one, depending upon the specific model.

I was about to spend the $$ on a complete Dyna system for my 700, and then modify the bike to take it (no mechanical advance), when I found a used GS700 CDI on eBay for $75.

Still running four years later.

A benefit to me was getting rid of another "black box" on the bike. The Ignition Module goes away with the Dyna S installation. That and just upgrading a 28 year old component has it's own "peace of mind" effect. I'll have one bike with a complete Dyna ignition set up and another with just the coils and wires.

Alright guys, thanks for the info and the $$$ savings. The stock CDI ignition works just fine so I think I'll keep that and just the old coils/spark plug wires/spark plugs are getting replaced.

If you are replacing the coils with Dyna coils and such as some one who has a fleet of 28 year old suzukis with orignal CDI units installed, The CDI unit is Bombproof unit, stock coils suck and all my Suzukis have Dyna coils installed and it makes a difference in reliability and startability (was that a word ?) so if your stock CDI works save your money on the Dyna ignition for that 78 GS1000 project bike that needs the points replaced. And I saw a new plug thats out in the magazines that supposedly puts out a really big spark, 1 draw back, 25 bucks a plug.

The Dyna S still has the "black box". The modern electronics are so much smaller that the "black box" functions are now contained in the crank trigger "boxes". :-)

Just wait for a good buy on Ebay. One of these days I should install my Dyna ign I have installed the coils but still using the points - with 0 problems for the last 20K miles

IF you were so inclined, given the upgrades you are doing to that motor, you might look into the programable Dyna set up. I personally dont know jack about them, but from what ive read, i believe it allows you to advance or retard your ignition based on the curve that works best for your set up. May be entirely wrong tho..heh
