Engine case repair.

I was in a minor accident today. A rare 65f in Kansas City, Mo. Waiting For oncoming traffic to clear before making a left turn. Start left turn & am interrupted (side swiped) by Mini van passing me on my left. Bounced off side of van with no damage to my person & managed to stay upright. Kneecap saved by strap on armour. Bike not so lucky. Bent handlebars, front turn signal, Gauges, mirror, clutch lever.All crunched.

Bad thing is the left engine cover (shifter side) has a crack about 2.5 to 3 inces above bottom center on the front edge. Can't really tell how large it is. Driped a small amount of oil at the scene of accident when i had it sitting on the side stand. Placed on center stand it stopped.

Finished dealing with three fools in the van. No police at seen, no injuries they requested we info exchange & walkin' police reports. The police are too busy in The N.E. area of kansas City to mess with small taters. Was 2 blocks from a friends house so went there to call wife & check out bike. Every thing worked properly shifter, clutch all bent but workin'. No more oil leak so had wife follow me home. Now to the question I've been putting off. If case crack is minor can it be braised, welded or other?

I really cant afford a major bill on a 500.00 Machine. That was my point in getting it in the first place. And I have a sneaking suspision the insurance info they gave me was bogus. Lots of speaking in a foriegn language between the 3 of them. Especially when they thought the police were on their way. So I'll probably be footing the bill . Liability only on my bike. Any advice would be appreciated. Oh probably need some parts for her also. (1979) GS850GN Any available from you folks please let me know.

Is the crack in the stator cover or the engine case? If it's just the stator cover, they can be had pretty cheap on ebay, or post a wanted ad here. Could be welded as well.

Thanks for the concern Nessism. I'm pretty sure it is in the stator cover But not sure. It is on the stator covers edge. Don't have garage so couldnt get a very good look in the dark with flashlight. Will try to get better info & photo's tomorrow. Will post for parts here first (I feel I can trust you guys) when i get a list worked up. The able to weld is good news.

for a cheaper repair, vee out the crack slightly and fill with JB Weld, works fine and a cheap do it your self repair, about 3 sq inches of my GSXR1100 cases is JB Weld, no leaks or cracking anywhere.

Another comment: riding on warm days in the winter in the snow belt often isn't a good idea, even if the temperature reaches 65F:

> Wet ice on roads in shaded areas, especially near curbs.

> Lots of sand on roads, easy to slip.

> Sun is low in the sky, easy to blind you and cage drivers

> Cage drivers don't expect motorcycles on the road

Brian had a stator cover and stator he was selling a while back, pretty cheap. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=135983

Put the stator back up for sale after you swap your stator into the cover. You might even get your money back.

I jb welded the stator cover after it wore through on the asphalt, just temporarily though til I got round to getting a new/used one...that was 10 years ago.
