A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I found an engine in a scrap heap that I know is from a GS from looking at pictures, but I'm not sure how to tell which size and model.

Basically it is four cylinders and appears to be DOHC. The mufflers were laying beside it and it looked like 3 cylinders went to one exhaust and 1 went to the other.

I am planning to rebuild this engine to put into a go kart. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a model or part number that would help further identify the engine. Also, what are some good sites to order parts from for the rebuild?

On the right side of the engine their should be a machined pad stamped with the engine ID serial #

Before you go to alot of work $$$ Check and make sure the crank is OK
Take the head off & check TDC for # 1 & 4 should be the same if NOT the crank is twisted. Common on an abused GS550

when i bought the bike the guy told me he thinks it might be a 78 or 79 but when i ordered parts the guy said its listed from 78 and down or around76 so what tha heck....one coil says 78 on it it looks newer but it doesnt work the other one looks crappy and does...and when i ordered a gasket set for a 78 there was a extra pieace sticking out of the front of the block it still worked but it looked like mayb they make one for all....i no longer have the frame i heard u can identifie it like that the only thing i can find is on the motor it says gs-400 then some numbers....the motors is it awsome shape ...id like to know the year of it

To tell the displacement, it should be stamped on the left (if it were in the bike), at the base of the cylinder block.
