A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does the Metra run out there in the vast wastelands and forests that lie outside the city? That would be perfect. I think my friend is lending me his van but getting it up in there will be fun.
I live within a block of the Blue Line and the Eisenhower Expressway. I could take you with me when I go if we can work out the timiing. Getting a GS into the back of a full size van is relatively easy if you are strong or have a helper. I use two sections of 3/4 inch plywood as a ramp. If you have an L model you have to tilt the bike at the top of the ramp to let the handlebars clear the door.

mastiff and domino, keep me posted in what you figure out, if there is room in your van i would like to jump on this wagon too.
i live only 2 miles from domino.

Denis, Domino, Ryan,

Yes, Metra runs to the vast wastelands of DuPage County. I'm not sure what line it is but it used to ba called Chicago Northwestern. I think the schedules show it as Chicago to Aurora. The Lombard stop is less than a mile from my house. I could certainly taxi the GS guys to and from the station. There is plenty of room in the garage to leave bikes for a few days. Doing so will require that I leave my car outside and have to get into a cold car in the morning but I'll make the tough sacrifices for you guys!

Thanks. Sounds good, if I don't get this van (which I would have all weekend as I need to move some furniture also.....oh boy) we can go out hopefully. You're picking up another GS? That list is getting long man!

Joe, I talked to the guy from http://www.realgaskets.com/files/motorcycle.htm the other day. Nice guy, said that with these type of silicone gaskets we don't want to over torque them down causing "pooch"......? Well, he said 20 to 25 lbs torque max and use locktite on the screws. I didn't know that these types of gaskets are reusable/washable and racers run these because of the frequent adjustments needed. He also said that they can be a pain to install because of the material? Too jiggly...? I am supposed to get mine by Friday hopefully.

i've got my real gasket and my valve adjustment tool ready to go.

since i spent $35 on the tool...who's bringing the beer? :P

They recommend locktite for the screws

Gary wrote this on a thread a while ago.

Always use anti-sieze on on any bolt going into aluminum, it saves a lot of headaches. Never use Loctite on a steel bolt going into aluminum, there is a chemical reaction that can cause the aluminum to come out with the bolt resulting in a very nice hole with no threads.

The thread is here: http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/viewtopic.php?t=8957&highlight=loctite+aluminum+threads

Now I'm confused again. Big surprise. Do we use loctite or not?

Hmmmm... have Saturday evening plans but might be able to stop by earlier in the day.

I won't bring either of my bikes, but would look forward to meeting you guys and learning something... I'll let you know later this week if I can make it.

Now all I need is an address and directions from Buffalo Grove (Rt 53 and Lake Cook Rd is my basic starting point). Also, let me know what time you guys are planning to start Saturday morning.

Thanks!

do you check your email ever Steve? ;) Joe sent directions a few days ago...

Engine noises and valve clearance adj.

Engine noises and valve clearance adj.

Hi man,I haven't listened to your mill so can't say.Have you compared your n-gine with another sound wise?Cam chain noise can sound like an uneven rattle from the middle of the engine.sometimes droping off on the over-run,there at all speeds but more noticeable at tick-over and lo revs due to exhaust noise, excessive valve clearance is usually heard as a light tapping sound from the top of the engine slower than crankshaft speed and can diminish as engine heats up.
Don't waste bread on a valve shim tool,I found it easier to use a large flat blade screwdriver on the edge of the bucket to relieve the spring tension enabaling the shim to be changed, remember to replace the shim with size markings face down.If your short of the size shim you want try any motorcycle workshop ,I would'nt pay much more than $5 a piece though.
On tyres S and T ratings are good up to 115m.p.h. approx.,you only pay more for the extra you wont need.I believe in the U.S. most people don't ride much over 70.

I check it often Adam, and after re-checking it several times I can't seem to come up with one that included directions and an address... I even checked for recently deleted email and it wasn't there either. I'd sure appreciate if you forward it to me -- it'd be a real bitch to drive around Lombard Saturday looking for the noisy garage!!

Thanks,

Well gentlemen, I just found out that I am officially out of the picture for this weekend......DOH! Unfortunatly duty calls and I must work........ :-({|= ](*,)

It sucks but its a done deal. I really was looking foreward to getting my bike sorted out. I got my silicon gasket and everything.....it'll get done eventually. Winter is long. Thanks again Joe for the offer, I'm gonna make it out there one of these days....Good luck guys,

Guys,

Adam and I had a good garage session. We figured out the shim over bucket valve adjustment and discussed many other GS issues, listened to the Mighty Blackhawks lose in overtime, and drank (more than) a few Labatt Blues (Thanks, Adam). It sounds like Steve (Planecrazy), Ryan (First Timer), Denis (Mastiff) and Andy (Andys116) are going to come by tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing/meeting all of you. Adam's valve cover is off so we can see and poke around with the cam/valve area and see how it all works. I'm trying to get Adam to pull his cam chain tensioner so we can see that too. Ryan wants to put a relay or two on his bike so there will be some dreaded electrical work going on too. I think I've e-mailed all of you asking you to check this thread before heading out. Adam is going to call local Suzuki dealers first thing tomorrow to see if they have the shims he needs. If not we might ask you to check any dealers in your area. If you need directions or anything else, call me at (630) 268-9985.

C-YA,
Joe

i'm gonna try two Suzuki dealers in the morning looking for shims. we found that we need 6 shims total:

5 - 2.75mm shims
1 - 2.85mm shim

hopefully i can find these at the dealers here...i may need your help if i can't though.

looking forward to meeting some of you tomorrow and hanging out. i got Labatt Blue cravings still. :)

~Adam

...will check the thread again in the morning. See you guys tomorrow (or technically, later today)...
