    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So what is the consensus on engine finishes. I am painting the engine in my GS and going either silver base with black cylinders and head or all black.

Trying to decide whether to go gloss black or satin black?

For others info I sent a message to VHT and asked if the caliper paint could be used on an air cooled engine. They said that it was the same composition and would work perfectly fine, but, primer must be used. Either one of the high temp primers would be fine, but preferred the caliper primer.

I have seen posts on other forums where the caliper paint is usually available but not the engine enamel. This seems to be the case in most of Canada!

The gloss black looks great! It will probably be easier to keep clean also being glossy?

My engine is totally disassembled, I was going to put the bolts in a tumbler and paint them also.

Engine was not completely torn apart, all the covers were removed, then those areas sealed and the painted everything else, yes even the bolts, I did not need to do any engine work so did not take her apart that far.

Beautiful, I really like the looks of your combination black and polished covers. The motor looks fabulous mounted in the frame too. I can't wait to see the finished product. What color are you going to paint the body work? I'm too lazy to pull me engine out, but I love that look. Great job!

I recently used Plastikote engine primer and paint. Fantastic product, went on nicely, thick and evenly, seemed very durable. But the 'alluminum' was too bright for my liking so I went directly over it with VHT caliper and it adhered perfectly, great colour match for the stock aluminum as well. I originally painted the block with Duplicolour, primer and paint but it all flaked of 6 months later, I could blow it off with my compressor:eek: I had not run the engine after I painted it so maybe the fact it had never been heated had something to do with it, but I was still shocked. I would recommend the plastikote for sure and I've worked enough with the VHT to know it's a good product but you can not get the primer here in Canada.
 
The one I've used before is the engine primer that is fuel resistant, not sure about the header primer. I've called Canadian Tire head office and they said to talk to my local store and they said their distributor cannot get it in..arrrrrrr. Lousy thing is they carried it 3 years ago.
 
I also noticed a lot to he VHT stuff has been taken over by Duplicolor product on the shelves
 
VHT High Temp Universal Aluminum...Part # SP127 None better as far as color and outright toughness on an engine.

VHT and Duplicolor is the same company, so they should be interchangeable. I've used both, interchangeably, and have not had any problem.

Interesting about the Plastikote as this is the first time I've heard praise of it over Duplicolor. I DO know that you have to heat cure the Duplicolor for it to reach maximum durability. Until then, it can be quite soft and fragile.
 
VHT has the same info on its cans...something to the effect that the paint wont be chemical resistant till baked.
