A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Engine ping

tlg1100

Forum Mentor
I have a 1981 gs 1100 dyno coil and ingnition.I replaced right hand crankseal and check valve clearence. The bike has some kind of v@h cams.I now have ping in motor when I just let at clutch, only does it for a second at low rpm.In neutral revs up just fine. The timing is at stock setting should I play around with timing or look else where Any advise

Pinging

Pinging

If you're already running 93 octane gas, you can try replacing the springs on the spark advance. when they get weak, the spark advances too early, causing a ping. you can test this with a timing light. You should not reach full advance before 2000 RPM, at a minimum. Before tunable ignitions, we would put stiffer springs on the advance of hotter motors to bring in the advance later.

If the cams you have are SHORT duration, you could have too much cylinder pressure for the timing. If this is the case, you would either need higher octane fuel or to retard the timing. Ray.

When someone says 'ping' the first thing that comes to mind is fuel quality and / or timing.

thats about the only way i can describe it.I have had cars and other bikes to same thing and it was gas or timing but for some reason i am concerned this might be something bad, very bad.

WHat they said + My 850 had a habit of pinging when I first got it. replacement of intake boots fixed the problem. Check the boots too!

Air leaks and lean tuning cause pinging - those symptoms are more common in the GS than bad timing

I sprayed carb cleaner around carb boots with no change in rpm.Done best I could with lean rich adjustment, have coulor tune have not used yet.Is there better way to check for leaks. What do any gsers do to adjust there carbs.Mine were about 3 turn out, after carb cleaning I started with that, than adjusted tell it seemed to be running right. This was last summer and did not notice [ ping] until lately.

Check to see if your mechanical advance mechanism turns smoothly as well.

If you have air leaks the idle will creep up when the engine is warm and the idle will be very inconsistent in general and will hang when blipping the throttle.
