A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Exhaust leak

Got stalled in my quest from this thread... http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=171206

When my stator cover gasket started leaking. Fortunately, I was ordering plug wire caps from Bike Bandit, so throwing a gasket on there was easy enough, and I went hog wild and sprang for the whole set of stainless hex-head pretties from Z1 while I was at it. But I digress...

While I was completing my combination gasket-replacement/oil change and lying on the ground double checking my second attempt to get an unruly new oil filter cover gasket to seat properly, I noticed a stronger exhaust smell than I expected down there, and when I put my hand out, I could feel the puff.

Turned out to be a small (maybe 7mm x 2mm) hole in the exhaust right at the curve of the #3 header, before it connects with the crossover.

I have three questions...

1.) I think I can fix this, heard "collars" mentioned and such, both strapped and welded-on. Knowing this forum, I can't believe I'm even asking this, but anyone have an opinion about header repair goops? Or advice on how to fix it properly.

2.) I envision needing to remove the exhaust to get this sorted, anything else I should do while it's off? It's an Arizona bike, so it's in pretty good shape - more rust in the last year and a half since I moved to AL than in the 29 years previous, and I know they're hard to come by. I'd like to keep it as long as possible. Can I get the small rock dings out or should they just be left?

3.) Can anyone confirm that I need to get this (and any other leaks) fixed before I worry about additional carb adjustments?

I'll try to post a pic next day or so. Thanks for any advice!

PM me

I replaced an old system from a 1980 because it had rusty mufflers. 2 and 3 are separate and easily replaceable. You can have one of mine. Put a hose clamp on it for now, or get cafe cliche with the insulation tape wrap.
