Exhaust, tach and fuel filter questions

I'm starting to get down and dirty with my new(old) lady. I had a few questions about my '82 GS850L. First off, I could hear an exhaust leak and discovered the ring clamp is missing and it's a bit rusted around the entire coupler (just this one though, the other 3 seem to be fine). Exhaust is only leaking out the top from what I can see/hear. Is there supposed to be a gasket of some sort also? Do I replace the clamp and hope for the best, replace the crossover or buy a full exhaust? I see that sclavish is selling one off a '81 GS850G for $75 plus shipping.
(clicky bigger)

Second, my tach lense is extremely clouded. It looks like the whole thing was either taken apart and shamefully put back together allowing the weather inside the lense. Or the original lense was replaced with this. Is it possible to clear this thing up? I've seen lense cleaner for car headlights. Has anyone had luck with that?

Lastly, I have read some mixed reviews about fuel filters and I have one coming off the right of my petcock. Is this factory? It's dirty for sure and has an air bubble in it. If I replace it I think I'll get something a bit bigger and easier to change.

Just for giggles, here is a picture of what my rear brake reservior looked like before last night. I didn't get a picture of the front but lets just say the amount of solid floating around in it surprised me the brakes worked at all. The sight glass is still brown from solids getting into the crack though. Maybe I'll blow some air into it when I need to bleed the brakes again.

Not sure if the exhaust requires a gasket...somebody will....a clamp is certainly needed. I don't think there's any reason to replace the exhaust. However, if you can get your hands on an original exhaust for your bike for $75...get it !! That's a very fair price if it's in decent condition. Beware of shipping costs...

Not sure how to clean up that lens. It is removable, although doing so is something akin to surgery.

The fuel petcock has a filter on it and an inline filter should not be needed. How does the inside of the tank look ? Get a flashlight...NOT A LIGHTER !!...and take a good look. Inline filters tend to reduce fuel flow. The fuel system is gravity fed, any restrictions are not good. If you keep it, replace it often and ensure it's the correct type of filter for gravity fed systems. And no, this is not from the factory.

Seems like you're on the right track !! Good Luck !!!

On the lens, you can try Mcquires Mag an Aluminum polish. It cleans those Composite lens' on cars/trucks really well.
The in-line fuel filter is way to small and will restrict the flow badly!
As for the Master cylinders, I use a "turkey baster" to remove as much crap as possible and then fill and gravity bleed the system until it is all clean. (don't get any brake fluid on paint!) It can be washed off with water as brake fluid is water soluble.
The exhaust, can be sealed with some high-temp Ultra Copper Permatex and a clamp.

Hi,

Your "pre-muffler" looks pretty rusty. But if it's still serviceable you can replace the gaskets, actually they are called "connectors" in the parts fiches. Mr. Redman put together a pictorial guide and donated it to my website. Check out his "Replaceing Exhaust Connectors".

You can always pick up a single gauge on ebay. I see them quite often. Use the lens to replace yours.

If your tank and carbs are clean there is absolutely no need for a fuel filter. Most of the time they cause more problems than they're worth (fuel restriction).

Defintely replace all the brake fluid front and rear. You'll be glad you did.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your indulgence,

Yamaha has a nice fuel filter for their twins. It's about 2.5" long and 1.25 "in diameter. http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...authkey=Gv1sRgCKTzwsyJve6w9gE&feat=directlink No fuel flow problems on my GS1000E. After trashing a freshly rebuilt set of carbs, I am a believer in fuel filters. My tank looked ok, but it had been sealed by the previous owner with Kreem. Alcohol in the gas breaks the Kreem down. Lesson learned. I have a brand new tank now, and still use the filter. I don't have an air box, K&N pods, so there is plenty of room to re-rout the fuel line and filter. If your tank is not pristine, it's got plenty of junk in it even if it is just rust particles. Check out my professional tuning via electricians tape.:) Waiting for my properly set up carbs from WG.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Oops...I guess it was time for a hair cut anyway. ;) It looked clean in there when I got gas. It seems dark towards the back of the tank but that could just be lack of light through the gas. I'll have to give it a day or two to put on some miles before I'll know for sure. It's going to rain today. :(

I tried to gravity bleed the front. The right calliper wouldn't flow at all. I tightened up the left side and squeezed the heck outta the lever and got nothing. Took off the bleeder screw and the inside of the calliper looked dry. Put the bleeder back on, loosened the hose on the calliper, gave it one huge squeeze and shot rusty brake fluid all over the floor! She's a little squeaky but stops 100% better.

I assume it's best to replace all four connectors at once "since I'm in there"...is there enough wiggle room once the clamps are off that I won't have to pull the pipes off the exhaust head and/or the tail pipes?

Check out my professional tuning via electricians tape.
That must add 10-15% more horsepower. :D
